For a minute there the Nike Dunk High AC was going down a very distinct path materials wise, outfitting itself again and again with an all canvas upper. Seems like we’re at another fork in the road this time, with the autoclaved version of this Nike Sportswear classic now donning ripstop nylon on top to break up the bits of suede paneling. The boot laces and metal eyelets are still intact, pairing up with the earthy colors for a borderline ACG look. About two weeks ago, Sneaker News showed you a duo of Nike Dunk High ACs utilizing the same all-over canvas build. It’s fairly common to see a preview differ slightly from the released product, often with the edited version now carrying an elevated value thanks to its scarcity, but it’s even less common to see two different versions of the same release come to market at different retailers. But that might be exactly what happened with these two formerly befitting the ‘Gum Toe Pack’ nickname, a shorthand reference that no longer has meaning with retailers in Asia like Limited Edt recieving an identical design that features an all white sole. All the rest is the same: canvas upper, leather laces, distinctive eyelets, plaid sockliner and vulcanized sole; which sole would you prefer to see at US Nike Sportswear stores?

Following up on a long string of BTTYS-style drops from the cupsoled original, the autoclaved Dunk High will return in a couple months in much the same style we remember from its January 2012 releases. These new Nike Dunk High ACs don’t have an official pack name, but their combination of a monochromatic twill upper with boot-like lace details and a gum rubber kickplate manages a rustic vibe that’s still versatile enough for everyday wear. Nike debuted its vulcanized take on the beloved Dunk High silhouette in the summer of 2009 at Tier Zero retailers and followed that up last September with a ‘Deconstructed Pack’ of Quickstrikes available at that same exclusive list of stores. It looks like there may have been another TZ drop scheduled somewhere in the middle there, as this Nike Dunk High AC TZ sample has just popped up with an ‘FA10′ date on the inner tag. That means that had this glossy black and gum number hit retail, we would have had three fairly evenly-spaced drops, and heaven only knows what kinds of other colors might have come along for the ride. These have a sort of ‘True Religion’ look to them thanks to bold contrast stitching on the toebox and rear panel; would you have rocked them with jeans or any other type of pants, or was this design best left to the cutting room floor? If you were wondering why you might not have seen as many Dunk Highs at your local Nike Sportswear retailers recently, it’s not because NSW isn’t being true to this beloved pillar, but rather that some of its output for this season has been transferred into a recent variation. The Nike Dunk High AC has earned a bit of extra attention in early 2012 thanks to a bunch of monochromatic suede looks that should satisfy loads of male and female sneakerheads throughout the spring. The above pictured pair is a mens drop, but black and Cool Grey suede and wool is the kind of impeccable combination that’ll satisfy anyone, anytime, anywhere. This one offers a nice foil to the massive array of white-midsoled Dunk designs out there, and you’ll find them at select NSW stores like Titolo.

There has been no shortage of Nike Dunk High AC releases for the men’s category, but the WMNS version of this sneaker has been pretty hard to come by in recent months. Looking to reverse that pattern for the Spring 2012 season are these two pairs. Coming as the brighter counterparts of a recent duo of men’s pairs, the suede look is again applied along with some patterned treatment for the lining. Is the minimal AC look more fitting for a WMNS release or do the ladies out there prefer the classic sole? The Nike Dunk High AC is one of those sneakers that may take a layman a few seconds of staring to figure out the alterations made from the base-model Dunk. Of course if you’re familiar with the infinite iterations and their respective initials you know that AC indicates the autoclaved sole. The wipe of traditional Dunk-tooling results in something a bit more minimal, as seen on the red and khaki versions shown here. Like the navy pair from earlier this week, these also take the textile treatment on the inner and towards the tongue, getting some groovy patterns to spice up the monotone upper. At a certain point in history, a vulc-soled Dunk seemed just as foreign as a cupsoled Blazer. But this age of hybrid experimentation has given us countless configurations of trusted classics, and the autoclaved build on the Nike Dunk High AC has proven to be one of the more nautral and satisfying alterations in recent memory. The monochromatic vulcanized Dunk design we just saw on a double Khaki pair a couple weeks back is replicated in navy blue suede, yet another one of those perfectly balanced Nike Sportswear formulae that you can apply in a huge range of colors.
