Is the Dunk going to be forced to play second fiddle to the Nike Air Force 1 given that 2012 is set to be a banner year for the latter? The selections have been a bit slim, but what has made its way to retail has been pretty pleasing. Following up on the textured look of Nike Dunk Low shown here is a release that takes a pretty similar approach material-wise. Where the two differ is the blocking, with the obsidian/khaki pair pictured above opting for a more solid look and even bringing in some pop with the limed out laces and lining. Hit the jump for the full photos of this upcoming Nike Dunk Low, which can be had a bit early over at RMK.

While the hightop version has earned three different Quickstrikes for the 2012 NBA All-Star Game, the Nike Dunk Low has been relatively quiet since its appearance in last fall’s ‘Aztec Pack’. Among the few blips on the radar since then was a preview of the above pictured pair, one that’s now starting to arrive at Asian retailers and will be at select Nike Sportswear stockists in the States shortly. They come with a classically simple combination of Team Red, Medium Grey, black and white, which is just a few degrees away from being an un-Ultraman release. How do these rank against last year’s ‘Vintage Pack’ drop, or even the original co.jp-exclusive? The Nike Dunk is an institution in the sneaker world, a model that’s been going strong for over a quarter-century with well over that still left in the tank. The Dunk is one of those foundational models that’s seen a bit of attention stolen by the newfangled lifestyle sneakers that’ve come onto the scene in the past couple years, and that’s where this newest custom release from Pimp My Kicks comes into play. Handcrafted by Hollywood’s Oliver Moore Bootmakers, the Nike Dunk Hybrid Dress collection by PMK pairs rich mahogany and olive dress leather with black authentic alligator for a mere 5 pairs each of the ‘Spy’/wingtip and ‘Soldier’/captoe Highs along with the ‘Tailor’/penny loafer Lows and another lowtop that echoes the ‘Golf Pack’ Dunk Low SB’s tassled lace cover. The quality is apparent in more images you’ll see after the jump, and in a world where we haven’t yet seen a Dunk Bespoke experience, is it possible these are some of the nicest pairs ever created? Let us know what you think and stick with Sneaker News for more custom sneaker designs.

Nike SB’s releases might get the lion’s share of attention when it comes to Dunk releases these days, but don’t forget about Nike Sportswear’s quarterly drops. The Nike Dunk Low is coming up for spring 2012 in two new colorways that offer a case study in how blocking affects the overall feel of a relatively simple design. This first pair is arguably the stronger standout of the two thanks to a bright yellow on the overlay that really pops against a navy blue base. The choice of a brown Swoosh turns out to be critical in adding balance to allow for the ubiquitous white Dunk midsole to make a welcome appearance, and you can see more angles of how it all fits together after the jump below. via mita sneakers

Following up on our most recent preview of the Nike Dunk Low comes another pair that should hit retailers here in the States within the next few weeks. These utilize the same exact colorblocking pattern and distribution of materials as the yellow and navy blue edition, but achieve a much different effect thanks to a reversal of the saturation of overlay vs underlay sections. A stronger foreground in rich burgundy leather in addition to black Swooshes and heel badges gives these a decidedly more aggressive feel, but both designs will find their fair share of applications within a decently varied wardrobe. The Year of the Dragon begins on January 23rd and marks the earliest celebration of Chinese New Year since 1965. But in the sneakerhead world, the Water Dragon has made his mark well in advance of even the Gregorian calendar flip, starting all the way back in September when we first laid eyes on the LeBron 9 ‘China’. Zoom KD IV and Air Jordan 2012 colorways have popped up in the meantime, and it’d be a wise investment to wager on an Air Force 1 Low joining the fray, but today’s news is a kids-sized edition of the AF1′s biggest rival in the Nike Sportswear classics lineup. The Nike Dunk Low GS ‘Year of the Dragon’ loses the blue watery tones and instead opts for a black, red and gold colorup with lizard detailing on the overlay whose overall effect is both reptillian and reflects its country of origin. ’2012′ heel embroidery and a wicked dragon insole make these an interesting possibility for thsoe who can fit them, and you’ll see a series of detailed images when you click through on the jump below. via Ice Field

Over the course of its quarter-century in the game, the Nike Dunk has released in probably more white-midsoled colorways than all the other versions combined, so how do you get some extra life out of such a standby blocking option? How about a vibrant outsole with another exuberant shade on the midsole stitch for good measure? That’s exactly what we’ve got here with this new Dunk Low GS, a model whose Metallic Silver and white upper is ever so slightly feminine when paired with the aforementioned Bright Turquoise and Laser Pink accents. You can see more of these after the jump to decide for which little sneakerheads they’re most appropriate, and let us know how these rank against the best kids Nikes we’ve seen in recent months. via Dunk
