Nike Huarache History: The Evolution of Tinker’s Neoprene Sneakers

nike huarache history Nike Huarache History: The Evolution of Tinkers Neoprene Sneakers

The Nike Huarache line is another of those timeless Nike collections that we have Tinker Hatfield to thank for. The sneakers first landed back in 1991 in the form of the Nike Air Huarache, that runner that was one of the earliest examples of Nike willfully creating a sneaker that was “stripped to the bare essentials”, as the vintage ad copy claims. That stripping also manifested in the branding used – Tinker and co. scaled back the Swoosh coverage to create something that could better rest on the laurels of its technology. That technology was one that actually was in danger of not making it to retail at one point in production; the legend goes that Nike was weary of bringing the model to market, but a test run sold at the NYC Marathon in the early 90s had runners clamoring for the model and it was in turn given the greenlight.

Nike Sportswear gave us the next best thing to an Air Huarache retro in 2008/09 with a variety of releases inspired by its OG colorway, which means these are even next best-er.  One degree away from a straight up throwback in a couple key ways, this new Nike Huarache Free will satisfy the masses who’ve been waiting for the classic Scream Green look since Y2K.  They go with the Soar and Cyber accents, which, like NSW’s Varsity Royal and Mean Green offer an updated take on the familiar Sprite-like formula, while the mostly white Free sole is something the of which the Swoosh hadn’t even scratched the surface back in 1991.  Check these OG-like Huarache Free Runs after the jump and stick with Sneaker News for release info.  via mita sneakers

Nike Huarache Free 2012 ‘Calypso’

If the Air Huarache had debuted in 2012 instead of 1992, there’s a pretty good chance it would have come with a Free sole. The barefoot-mimicking grooved bottoms that debuted in 2004 pair perfectly with the Huarache’s foot-hugging booty and excess-eliminating external heel cage, this new Nike Huarache Free 2012 managing a similar blend of now and then with its Calypso-accented colorway. This teal shade takes you back to the early 90s, while a series of grey tones blend the white sole and black heel into a package with that recently perfected 2010s sense of balance. Click through to see more angles and pre-order yours before they hit Nike Sportswear stores like End next month.

Nike Huarache Free 2012 ‘OG Inspired’ – White – Soar – Cyber

Following our detailed look at the Tropique and Magenta-accented edition that imitates the early ’90s styles popular when the original Air Huarache hit retailers in 1992, comes a new release that sticks to the OG script save one key feature. This means that from a distance, the Nike Huarache Free 2012 pictured above is likely to be mistaken for the original (save the fact that most sneakerheads who will identify them at a distance, will also know that these are considerably easier to come by than a DS OG pair). But that switch to a grooved Free sole seems a perfect fit, this barefoot-mimicking bottom a natural extension of the long established neoprene booty upper. Click through to see how this classic style done with Soar and Cyber accents differs from the Varsity Royal and Mean Green pairing that typified the 2009 Air Huarache-inspired Nike Sportswear releaes, and pre-order this April release now from End.

Nike Sportswear retailers will soon receive their stock of the Free-soled Kukini update, and it looks like there’s a few more in store for the other cult favorite that just got the barefoot remix as well. These new Nike Huarache Free 2012s offer a glimpse of the period from which this design originated, the high-energy Tropique and Magenta-accented black and white design right in the intersection of early ’90s homage and spring 2012 B&W blocking. These are slated to arrive at NSW stores in April, but you can pre-order today from Titolo and check out a bunch of new images by clicking the jump below.

Nike Huarache Free 2012 – White – Navy

The Nike Huarache Free 2012 has extended its reach well beyond the original-imitating looks in this young year, this latest perhaps the cleanest we’ve seen, and maybe even in the series entire two decades.  White-on-navy is already one of those looks you can immediately tell how new/well cared-for a pair a kicks has been, and this pair’s grooved white sole pushes this pristine appeal over the top.  When you compare them to even the Team Red-accented edition that released a couple weeks back, it’s easy to see how the blue tones join together for a look that’s even more ‘classic’, if slightly less aggressive.  Take a gander at these after the jump and find them at Nike Sportswear retailers like Social Status.

Nike Sportswear Black History Month 2012 – Release Reminder

nike sportswear black history month 2012.jpg Nike Sportswear Black History Month 2012 Release Reminder

Nike’s motto for 2012′s Black History Month is ‘Uplift’ – a strong message highlighted by its brevity and stoicism. The signature graphic print and distinct colors seen on these four Nike Sportswear releases was developed by Nike designers, inspired by the International African culture and drawing visual cues from Kenyan beads, African-American quilt-making, and even the Brazilian Carnivale, and the entire capsule itself is a gesture of celebration of the achievements of three significant teams – the ’96 USA Womens Basketball team, the ’02 Brazil Mens Soccer team, and the ’08 Kenyan Long-Distance Running team. The NSW Black History Month collection will be available at select Nike Sportswear retailers; however, the release of the Air Max 1 has been postponed to a future date. Keep in mind that only the Air Force 1, Blazer, and Huarache Free 2012 will be available tomorrow!
