Nike Hyperdunk – Black – Game Royal

Duke/Kentucky isn’t a rivalry in the true sense of the word given how rarely these two teams actually play one another, but with two of the top college basketball programs ever connected by Christian Laetner’s legendary turnaround J, there’s always a bit of extra energy in the air when the Blue Devils and Wildcats go at it. They clashed for the first time in eleven years on Tuesday night in Atlanta, and while UK rocked the home whites at the Georgia Dome, either team could make use of the sneaker pictured above this season. This new Nike Hyperfunk in black and Game Royal has those powerhouses’ away looks on lock and are basically an inverted and darker answer to the white-accented pair Kentucky star freshman Nerlens Noel wore in the Champions Classic opener. Have a closer look so you can compare them to earlier Lunar Hyperdunk releases and grab yours today from NikeStore.

nike hypermag customs Nike HyperMag Customs by Brian Villanueva

The original Nike Mag designed was in fact a direct inspiration to Eric Avar’s Nike Hyperdunk of 2008, and sneaker customizer Brian Villanueva actually went about a Mag-inspired Hyperdunk Custom before. Upon the 2011 release of the Mag, Villanueva decided to revisit his original project and powering it up to be on par with the original; this Nike HyperMag custom features several mechanical details like a rechargeable lithium ion battery, LED lighs on the heel, electroluminscent tech on the tongue and outsole, and a built in charger that can be plugged into an outlet or a USB. Brian’s amazed us before with before with his Lunar prototype before, and this custom is certainly no sleeper as he brings the Hyperdunk to the future with this amazing work. A gallery of images awaits you below so take a look and let us know if this is the direction you’d like customs sneakers to go in.

Team USA will face Australia in its first tournament game of the London Olympics in just a short time, the same team they trounced in the 2008 quarterfinal round by thirty-one points.  This squad often being called simply the ‘New Dream Team’ redeemed USA Basketball four years ago, their renewed commitment echoed by Nike Basketball’s revelation of a game-changing performance machine that’s still the standard to which modern basketball sneakers are compared.  The Nike Hyperdunk is yet another example of Eric Avar leading an innovative new project to fruition, its use of Flywire and LunarLite technologies so futuristic, it was only natural to include a Nike Mag-like heel counter (and that legendary ‘Marty McFly’ debut edition).  Click through to see sketches that represent the epicenter of a shift from which we’re still feeling the aftershocks and stick with Sneaker News as we approach the right-end of the timeline on this Swoosh roundball retrospective.
