The first of two confirmed Nike Kobe 8 Elite releases hits stores tomorrow, with the only other version being the Black/Gold version dropping in June. Sneaker News provided you a detailed look at the Special Edition Packaging at this incredible release, and considering that the Kobe 8 Elite will be scarce in variety, you’re not gonna want to miss out on these! Retail is $200 and hits select Nike Basketball retailers, so take one final look below and cop a pair now from eBay.

This sick colorway of the Nike Kobe 8 Elite is a bit of a sore sight. While the “Lakers” colorway is pretty darn impressive of the Elite model, we know this is the shoe (and according to the source of this photo, the exact shoe) that Kobe Bryant sustained the season-ending and Championship-erasing injury right before the regular season came to a close. To make things even more of a pain, we know that these won’t release because Leo Chang confirmed that only two colorways of the Nike Kobe 8 Elite will release (the Black/Gold in June and this weekend’s “Superhero”). We hope there are some change of plans coming soon because these would be really nice on feet, so check out the extra shot (as well as another look at the Nike Kobe 8 “Blackout” PE) below and let us know if you’d like to see these release.

Need proof that Kobe Bryant is a superhero? We’ll point to his heart-breaking injury the other night and how the Mamba went ahead and made both of his free throws right afterwards. When Nike Basketball unveiled the initial Elite Series last spring, a lot of eyebrows were raised in response to the high pricetags, but upon examination of what you were getting for your money, it became clear that these shoes were packing some next-level performance features. We sat down with designers Leo Chang and Jason Petrie prior to the release of the first Elites to really delve into what made the shoes so “elite” and why the product justified the hefty pricepoints. As we learned, every tiny detail of the shoes are analyzed, considered and upgraded using materials and technologies that could never make it onto the in-season models because of their high cost. The Elite Series lets these designers loose to do all the things they’ve always wanted to do on a basketball shoe, and the end result is the pinnacle of what’s been achieved to date in the basketball footwear genre.

With the launch of the Nike Basketball Elite 2.0 Collection, Nike has created alternate personas focusing on the “Superhero” qualities of its three signature athletes. For Kobe Bryant, the emphasis went on his speed, precision and unparalleled vision, using a lethal green pit viper snake colorway to bring some energy to this special installment of the Nike Kobe 8 Elite. With a debut launch of the Elite 2.0 line set for this Saturday, and a release of the “Superhero” set the following weekend, Nike Basketball hit us up with this limited edition special box featuring the Nike Kobe 8 Elite in a transparent case inspired by classic toy packaging to further bring home the superhero theme. Last night saw Kobe Bryant breaking out a previously unseen version of his Nike Kobe 8 Elite silhouette, one with a distinct “Lakers” palette. It felt like it was only a matter of time before his Elite line for this year was diversified just a little bit, given how the likes of LeBron James and Kevin Durant have previewed plenty more pairs than the baseline gold looks. Of course the night that this new style debuted was soured by a Kobe injury, one that may or may not signify the beginning of a new era for the Lakers’ golden boy. So there’s some serious concern that the Los Angeles Lakers might miss the Playoffs altogether – it all comes down to the final few games of the regular season. To put away any doubt of missing the postseason, Kobe and crew just need to win out, and last night’s gutsy win over the Portland Blazers proved that sometimes that extra 10% and the “will to win” do make a difference. For last night’s crucial game, Kobe Bryant debuted the Nike Kobe 8 Elite in Black/Gold – a shoe that as of now won’t release until June, which is separate from the release dates of the KD and LeBron Elite releases.
