The Nike Kobe 8 continues to prove itself a late bloomer, with a gang of killer colorways still in the works despite Kobe having long since stopped playing for the season. The most straightforward basketball style amongst them is this, the Engineered Mesh utilizing Nike Kobe 8 “Venice Beach”. That unofficial nickname is one presumably referencing the colorful graffiti of that locale, a set that’s done justice by the streaky upper of this sneaker. It looks like LeBron isn’t the only one who will see his sneakers transform into a lifestyle look this year. The Nike Kobe 8 looks to be transitioning into this Nike Kobe 8 NSW model as well. The upper echoes that Kobe vibe with both the Swoosh placement and the remnants of the heel clip on the back, both of which are placed on a flat-footed sole to help it transition to an entirely different category. The Nike Kobe 8 has been a bit of a late bloomer, with some of the most excited colorways coming out after Kobe’s season came to a close. Examples include the forthcoming “Mambacurial” version and this, a Nike Kobe 8 that’s been linked about with a “Venice Beach” nickname in some circles thanks to its crazy colorful upper. The release info to date has been a little murky thanks to some mismatched Nike info, but it looks like they’re coming to stores next Saturday, May 25th. The Nike Kobe 8 Mambacurial will release on June 7th here in North American, having already arrived at select Asian spots. The sneaker is one with heavy soccer ties, ties that link back to Kobe’s upbringing in Italy that had him equally exposed to basketball and “football” as our European friends call it. The Engineered Mesh upper pioneered by the Nike Kobe 8 proper is reworked here, picking up an alternate bootie look from the Nike Mercurial Vapor IX. On back to back days at the end of this past February, Sneaker News showed you two Nike Kobe 8 System PEs designed for the school for whom Kobe Bryant would have played had he not gone prep-to-pro. Today we get a better look at both of these Duke Kobe 8s, as two different Blue Devil colorways make the most of the Engineered Mesh design. A black edition would be well suited for away games while the tonal blues would be a fit for Cameron or abroad, but the real question is, which do you prefer? First overall pick in the WNBA and brand new Nike athlete Brittney Griner is already being well taken care of by the Swoosh folks. Shown here is a player exclusive version of the Nike Kobe 8 made for Griner, one that of course lines up with the colors of the Phoenix Mercury, the squad that was lucky enough to pick her up in the recent draft. Engineered Mesh allows the Nike Kobe 8 System to render just about any kind of graphics you could imagine. Several have been snake-themed as is the case with every Black Mamba signature from Nike Basketball, but this latest revelation opts for a more universal appeal. Done in a Knicks/Thunder-leaning colorway, the Kobe 8 employs a new streak at approximately Swoosh height as part of a larger deployment of wavy gradient fades.
