It was a sad turn of events for Kobe Bryant, who suffered a season-ending injury just a few days before the Lakers made it into the Playoffs. However, the Kobe 8 line-up that has yet to release might be some of the best we’ve ever seen for the Black Mamba as we get a first look at a soccer-inspired Nike Kobe 8 “Mambacurial” with that “FB” vibe with the Swoosh at the forefoot. The Los Angeles Lakers secured a more favorable first round playoff matchup by winning in overtime Wednesday night. But even if LA has a better chance against San Antonio than they probably would against Oklahoma City, there’s just no replacing the winningest member of Nike Basketball’s signature shoe lineup. Lakers fans will have to put their trust in Dwight Howard, Steve Blake and company, with new Nike Kobe 8 System colorways like this sick purple gradient edition in the unprecedented position of releasing while the Black Mamba is on the mend. It’s a shame we won’t see these Court Purple Kobe 8s live up to the ‘Playoffs’ tag they’d garnered earlier, but as you can see in more photos below, this is a superb colorway for both on-court and casual purposes. These will hit select retailers in just over two weeks, so stick with Sneaker News for updates as we approach the Saturday, May 11th release date.

While there may not be more Kobe Bryant coming for this season (Get well soon Mamba), there is more Nike Kobe 8 coming. This purple pair is on the way for May, and curiously carries a “Playoffs” designation from Nike. That’s not something we see slapped on too often at an official level, not to mention the fact that the Lakers are still in jeopardy of not making it to the post season. And if they do make it to the post season, they’ll have to go it without that future Hall of Fame player. So there’s some serious concern that the Los Angeles Lakers might miss the Playoffs altogether – it all comes down to the final few games of the regular season. To put away any doubt of missing the postseason, Kobe and crew just need to win out, and last night’s gutsy win over the Portland Blazers proved that sometimes that extra 10% and the “will to win” do make a difference. For last night’s crucial game, Kobe Bryant debuted the Nike Kobe 8 Elite in Black/Gold – a shoe that as of now won’t release until June, which is separate from the release dates of the KD and LeBron Elite releases. The big advantage of Engineered Mesh is that the material allows for some pretty incredibly gradient-effect visuals, as seen with the Nike iD options on all the EM-built shoes like the Lunarglide+ 4, Air Max+ 2013, and so on. The Kobe 8 isn’t an exception because this “Purple Gradient” colorway that the Mamba rocked some time ago is one of the sickest “Lakers” colorways we’ve ever seen don the Shozoku as the toe-to-heel utilizes the lush purple from light to dark. Paired with a black midsole speckled with purple and a snow white outsole, we have one of the best colorways of the Nike Kobe 8 – or perhaps ever. The Nike Kobe 8 has been consistently impressive with its understated and admittedly underrated versions that have hit stores just far. The Engineered Mesh has proven to be a boon in terms of spunky design, with the woven upper allowing for some interesting graphics like the Christmas pattern and geometric snakeskin. The “Easter” has been deemed as the best Kobe 8 yet, with some going as far as calling it the best thing since the Grinch. Agree? These are likely to go fast so get them tomorrow at select Nike retailers or from sneakersnthings85 on eBay.

The string of Player Exclusives in Kobe format might be the longest running set in the history of the Black Mamba’s signature shoe. W know for a fact that the special make-ups for the Westchester Comets goes all the way back to Kobe’s first official signature with Nike in the Air Zoom Kobe 1, so it’s amazing to see that this connection between Nike and the LA-based high-school is still going strong. It features the same Black/Red/White colorway for that Bulls-like appeal, with a Comets logo embedded on the medial ankle-collar of the shoe adding to the “PE” nature. Does Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers have what it takes to keep the Lakers afloat in the battle for Playoff positioning?
