The triathlon is among the most challenging tests of endurance in the sporting world, so while Ironman athletes are neither comfortable during training nor their competitions, they’ve managed to bless the lifestyle market with one of its comfy-est new kicks for 2012. The Nike Kukini Free pairs a neoprene upper and proto-Flywire elastics with a grooved Free sole for one of the most effortlessly comforting designs available today. You can choose between the perennial favorite ‘bred’ look or go with the same Stealth and Total Orange combo that made the most recent Air Max 90 Hyperfuse so appealing, and both are yours for the taking from Finish Line.

Much like the recently released Huarache Free Quickstrikes, the model pictured above takes a cult favorite classic runner and gives it a fresh twist courtesy of the barefoot-like Free sole. The Nike Kukini Free is a remix of 1998′s Air Kukini, a Presto-caged laceless design whose neoprene booty offers the kind of easy-on/easy-off appeal that’s big with triathletes. The style on this new Soar and Cyber combo is sure to find its share of fans in a variety of forward-looking sneakerheads (whether they’re Ironmen or not), its Sprite-meets-Spiderman look a nice alternative for a similar palette that manifests entirely differently on the recent Total Griffey Max 99 retro. Titolo expects to have these in stock in April just in time for the start of the baseball season, and you can start spring training with a visualization exercise involving more photos of these after the jump below.

The recent return of the OG Air Trainer SC IIs was more than welcome with the rabid cult following it’s built in recent years as the demand for a retro release built to a fever pitch. Here’s another model that was more obscure upon its debut and will probably always remain as such relative to the SC IIs, but the folks who are going to be into these should probably sit down before reading this. A trio of Air Kukunis were previewed around the turn of the year and judging by how long it’s been, you can consider them all but nixed. But this might not be entirely bad news, as perhaps Nike Sportswear was just clearing the way for the new Nike Kukini Free. It’s such an obvious match to have the Kukini’s elasticized skeleton lockdown system paired with the super-responsive Free 5.0 sole, and almost shocking when you consider how close in time these two looks debuted. Then again, it also goes to show how much the industry used to be regimented in its design when compared to the modularity that abounds with today’s ever-growing expanse of hybrids. So this is not only a dope minimalist runner, but also a statement on the last decade-plus of design evolution, and these three pairs should be in stores next summer. via CK
