The Freegums collabo design stands among the LeBron 9′s most visually impressive colorways, one so detailed they’re a steep challenge for today’s popular color-swap custom artists. Gourmet Kickz tried his hand back in February and came up with something that might even be more eye-catching than the original, and now a guy who’s building a reputation for some of the custom market’s most ingenious designs has offered his perspective. The ROM x Nike LeBron 9 ’Freegums All-Over’ is the opposite of GK’s in terms of its color/pattern blocking, and this pair’s large black and white sweeps give it an overall cleaner look while still thoroughly examining its inspiration. Are these the best LeBron 9 customs we’ve seen on Sneaker News? Click through to see a bunch more images and let us know what you think with a comment.

As a gesture of ‘Happy Birthday’ to LeBron James, Nike Basketball hooked up with Miami-based artist Freegums for a slick rendition of the Nike LeBron 9. Donning a basic White/Black/Red colorway and covered with an artwork derived from Freegums’ interpretation of LeBron James and the game of basketball, the Freegums x Nike LeBron 9 became one of the hits of 2011 and continues to be a popular choice today. Sneaker custom guru Gourmet Kickz, who brought you some of the more texture-centric customs like the ‘Copperhead Snakeskin’ Foamposite One, recently completed an ‘Inside-Out’ version of the Nike LeBron 9 ‘Freegums’, transcribing the detailed artwork onto the large weave panel on the upper. Adding to the high-energy appeal is the colorful speckling on the midsole. Do you like these better than the original? Check out the gallery below and let us know what you think.

Another great weekend of NBA sports was filled out by the collection of NBA games that went down from Friday to Sunday, and mixed in was a ton of great NBA Feet action from some common names that have popped up this season. Monta Ellis brought something new to his repertoire by wearing the Air Jordan XIII ‘Flint’, while Washington’s Jordan Crawford continued his Air Jordan VII agenda by wearing the Air Jordan VII ‘Cardinal’. In Miami, LeBron wore the Nike LeBron 9 ‘Freegums’ while Courtney Lee of the Houston Rockets whipped out the fresh Retro release of the week – the Air Jordan X ‘Chicago’. Deron Williams of the New Jersey Nets also introduced the Nike Zoom Hyperdunk 2011 Low, set for a debut this February. There’s plenty more to look at in the form of PEs and iDs from various brands, so check out the great recap from this week and stick with Sneaker News for more updates. via Yahoo!.

In 2010, Nike basketball got in touch with Miami based artist Alvaro ‘Freegums’ Ilazarbe for a special collaborative project that only a select few could accomplish. Nike’s desire for a home-grown perspective on a black and red lebron colorway was easily fulfilled by Freegums, who prizes black and white motifs and intricate brush strokes and utilizes those points of view in his work. Together, Nike and Freegums finished off this sick Nike lebron 9 colorway, infusing both the art culture of Miami while celebrating LeBron James’ birthday (been a while since we got a ‘Birthday’ release), and tomorrow will be your chance to cop one of the most understated lebron releases in years. Expect these at select Nike basketball retailers tomorrow, or pick up a pair now from ivehademall on eBay.

First LeBron James chose his designs for the initial facade at UNKNWN, then King James picked Freegums’ Nike LeBron 9 collabo to compliment the Miami Heat’s white jerseys during their home opener Tuesday at American Airlines Arena. It’s clear LBJ approves of MIA-native Alvaro Ilizarbe’s handstyles, and now the LeBron 9 he so deftly lined is being released as this year’s birthday tribute to one of the great talents the game of basketball has ever seen. This detail-rich design stands out precicely because its high contrast good looks can hold their own even away from the hardwood, and they’re sure to draw lines upon the New Years Eve release at select Nike Basketall stockists like Extra Butter. Have a closer look at some new images after the jump including the intricate tissue paper in which they’ll be wrapped, and if you can’t wait until the day after ‘Bron’s b-day to grab yours, secure a pair right now on eBay.

LeBron James is kicking off the 2011-12 NBA Season with back-to-back on-court wears of two high-energy colorways of the Nike LeBron 9. He started things off with the ‘Christmas’ on the Sunday, and followed that up with the Nike LeBron 9 ‘Freegums’, which is actually a special release commemorating his birthday, which falls this Friday, December 30th. The Freegums, of course, is especially distinguished for its detailed graphic on the inner lining as well as the tonal print on the Hyperfuse shell upper; it’s a nice home-grown touch to the Nike LeBron, as Freegums is an artist of the local scene in Miami. Other notable kicks from that game included Dwyane Wade’s ‘Home’ colorway of the Jordan Fly Wade 2 and Juwan Howard’s Air Jordan X ‘Chicago’. Check out more shots of LeBron James in action courtesy of Yahoo! and let us know how these compare to previous Nike LeBron ‘Birthday’ releases – or pick up a pair of the Freegums right now on eBay.

Is Freegums’ design the most important Nike LeBron 9 release so far? You could argue that the ‘Cannon’, ‘China’ or ‘Miami Nights’ has drawn more attention (though you’d probably just be saying which one you like best), but did any of those designs make it into LeBron James’ new UNKNWN retail spot (other than on the iPad-enhanced shelves)? It’s Freegums’ handiwork at the front door of the new Aventura Mall location, the same kind of intricate detail that marks the lining of his LeBron 9 collaboration. A select few were able to get pairs early at the private release party during Art Basel, but the general public will have to wait until New Year’s Eve for the chance to grab a pair at select Nike Basketball retailers like Millennium Shoes. But somewhere in the middle of these two polar opposites is a group nearly as elite as the Shoe Gallery party attendees: the select few who’ll be ahead of the curve by buying a pair that’s already available on eBay.

Imagine you had your hands on a raffle ticket entitling you to a super-deluxe special edition box carved to match the intricate sockliners on the Freegums x Nike LeBron 9, but had to take a BRB and missed your number being called, only to come back and see someone else leave with ‘your’ prize. That happened to some poor, unfortunate sneakerhead over the weekend in Miami, where Alvaro ‘Freegums’ Ilizarbe was on hand at Shoe Gallery to celebrate the drop of his first Nike collaboration. Soul-crushing timing fail notwithstanding, this was an event filled with smiling faces who’d come to see the wall of Freegums LeBron 9s and the similarly-styled wall upon which they were displayed, and you can see a video recap of the party by clicking on the jump below. via Stickie213
