While the NBA was mired in a lock-out, Nike Basketball shrewdly created three on-court and available-for-retail colorways of the Nike LeBron 9 modeled after three big-name collegiate basketball squads – the University of Kentucky, the University of Miami, and the Ohio State University. Dubbed the ‘University Pack’, all three colorways (sans team logos) hit stores, starting with the ‘Kentucky’, which dropped first in mid-October. Here we have a look at the ‘Home’ version of that PE (notice the UK logo on the tongue); it features a White primary base with Varsity Royal on the Hyperfuse/Flywire shell, Midsole, Weave paneling, and inner lining. Better than the ‘Away’? Check out the gallery of images below and let us know which College PE colorway of the LeBron 9 you like best. via LRJ23.

Hip-hop star Fabolous has a tendency to be spotted in the biggest party-centric metropolis’ in the world. This time around, he’s in Miami Beach. Fabolous performed live at LIV nightclub, electrifying the crowd and enhancing the jovial atmosphere with his chart-topping hits. During his live performance, Fab wore the Nike LeBron 9 ‘Kentucky’, a shoe that released this past weekend – the first wide release of a Nike LeBron 9 shoe. Fab’s been on a steady diet of Air Jordans for quite a while, so consider this out-of-the-ordinary LeBron sighting a welcome break from that consistent stream. The Nike LeBron 9 ‘Kentucky’ is set to debut tomorrow, but let’s take a look back at another Nike LeBron Kentucky PE – the Nike Air Max LeBron VII. The Kentucky Wildcats debuted that sick patent-leather PE on February 1st, 2010, when LeBron James himself sat courtside during a game. That PE, which could also be compared to the Nike Air Penny sneaker, featured a blue patent leather mudguard with Black/White upper detailing. Now compare the two – the Air Max LeBron VII and LeBron 9 – and tell us which of the two looks more ‘Penny Hardaway’; the LeBron 9, which bears some resemblance to the Nike Air 1/2 Cent, or the Air Max leBron VII, which could be another ‘Heroes Pack’ variation? Well, you’re better off picking the LeBron 9′s side, because these will actually release in stores – tomorrow to be exact. Expect them at select Nike Basketball retailers or pick up a pair now on eBay.

The idea for NCAA-inspired colorways of the Nike LeBron 9 actually goes back to the Nike Air Max LeBron VII, when three ‘TB’ inspired colorways released for Kentucky, Ohio State, and Clemson (though not officially, but those three schools rocked ‘em proudly during the 2010 March Madness Tournament). Then again, many of the LeBron take-down models from the Zoom Soldier line were also made in various team-oriented colorways, but the LeBron 9 is the first time an actual PE was made for specific schools (check out the Miami Hurricanes PE from yesterday). The released versions of the NCAA Pack of LeBron 9s won’t feature the PE logos on the tongue, but the beauty of these releases lie in the great colorways, like the Kentucky version that many have called an ‘Air Penny’ edition. This Saturday, October 15th, select Nike Basketball retailers like MrRSports will have these in stock as will Nikestore, so check out the detailed gallery of images below and let us know if these are a must-have for you.

What the Duke Blue Devils have been for Kobe Bryant in recent years, we might be seeing from the LeBron James-Kentucky Wildcats union: super-elite global basketball superstar who skipped college entirely hooks up with a traditional powerhouse whose historically blue and white uniforms have added a bit of black in the past decade or so. And that just means a bunch of dope player exclusive colorways for UK, and coming up soon after Midnight Madness sets in will be this new Nike LeBron 9 home PE. This edition finds its colorblocking flipped and then the black sections made white when compared with the ‘away’ edition we’d been seeing, but the biggest single difference here is the ‘UK’ tongue logo whose place was held by King James’ signature on the other pair. Does this mean it’s only a matter of time before the Kentucky ‘away’ and Ohio State PEs both feature their schools’ respective logos? Stick with Sneaker News to find out, and check out more images of the Kentucky LeBron 9s in the meantime. via Mjmvp23 on NT

Late last week, Jason Petrie gave us a first look at the Nike LeBron 9 ‘Kentucky’ during a Q&A video chat session. It features a Royal Blue/Black upper with a white swoosh and outsole for that complete Wildcats appeal, but as we’ve mentioned before, it’s hard not to see this as an ‘Air Penny’ colorway. We’ve already seen some of the other NCAA-inspired colorways, like the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Miami Hurricanes, so which of the three do you like best? These are slated for a release at select retailers like Oneness in Kentucky this Friday at midnight, so check out the extra shot of the Nike LeBron 9 ‘Kentucky’ below and be sure to stick with Sneaker News for more release updates and information.

Jason Petrie has been one of the more community-involved Nike designers in recent memory. They guy loves his craft, and more importantly, loves to discuss his role in creating the most advanced basketball shoe Nike has to offer. He recently made himself available for a lengthy online video chat, answering questions directly from Nike LeBron fans. In addition to providing some poignant responses to some great questions regarding the shoe’s performance and comfort as well as LeBron’s involvement in the process, Jason Petrie showed off a few unreleased Nike LeBron 9 colorways, like the Nike LeBron 9 ‘Kentucky’ and the Nike LeBron 9 ‘Miami Nights’, which Sneaker News gave you a first look at. Also featured during the chat session were a few preliminary samples, like the Z-Core sample ,which Petrie describes as the first step in materialization of the shoe, and a full-length 360-Air sample. Continue reading for a look at all that was shown in the video and be sure to stick with Sneaker News for all Nike LeBron 9 updates.
