Each of the four shoes were showcased during the 2012 Gold Medal Game where stars like LeBron, Kobe, KD, and many more shined brighter than ever before, resulting in yet another golden triumph for the red, white, and blue. For all the weight that’s been placed on the shoulders of the Nike Lunar Hyperdunk+ as far as carrying the flag for the Nike+ crossover into the world of basketball the sneaker has been a little short on colorways, with that USA pair being flanked by the likes of the Fireberry, black/blue, and a couple others. While the purple and gold present may have them looking like a Lakers pair, the sneaker shown is actually a Nike Lunar Hyperdunk+ created for their WNBA counterpart the Los Angeles Sparks. More specifically they were created as a player exclusive for hoopster Ebony Hoffman, an LA native who started her career with the Indiana Fever before making the transition back to the West in 2011. It’s been a little more than a month since Team USA took home the Gold at the London Olympics, but spirits are still high; at the final weekend of September, Nike Basketball will officially release the Olympic Gold-inspired colorways of the four headlining models – the LeBron X, Kobe VII, KD IV, and Hyperdunk. The LeBron X, of course, is the keynote installment of this set of releases as it introduces the tenth LeBron to the world, but the remaining three all deserve attention as well as each are hit with the alchemic touch that elevates them to the Gold standard. While there are quite a few pink sneakers coming in lately from the Beaverton labs, that colorway alone doesn’t quite push them into the ‘Think Pink’ category, one that is tied in directly with the Breast Cancer Awareness movement. The much talked about Nike Air Foamposite One sporting that super bright shade for example are a ribbon short of that philanthropic movement. The all new Nike Lunar Hyperdunk+ on display here however is very much a part of that group, with the typical tongue branding wiped clean in favor of the aforementioned ribbon. Despite the high-tech and advanced design/engineering of the Lunar Hyperdunk, the shoe symbolizes the spirit of basketball from its earliest roots as much as it does the future of the game and all the notable individuals who will walk the path. Made for a fallen hero of the 1980′s basketball scene in Chicago, IL, this Nike Lunar Hyperdunk+ set was put together by design boutique iLoveDust of the UK to pay tribute to Benji Wilson, a high-school phenom that dominated the high-school ranks as a player for Simeon Vocational High School. The distressed wooden box features a number of logo graphics specific to Benji’s personal life, like his school logo and ’25′ jersey number, and includes a pair of the Nike Lunar Hyperdunk+ in the ‘World Basketball Festival’ colorway. Nike’s Think Pink campaign continues again on the all-new Nike Hyperdunk+; the lovely Pinkfire II color tone hits the Hyperdunk upper in tonal fashion, with a crisp and wintry white on the forefoot Swoosh and outsole providing a useful bit of contrast. The ‘Think Pink’ has been a ‘regular’ on the Hyperdunk over the last few installments, which is a rather fitting homage considering Kay Yow is one of the greatest women’s basketball coaches to have ever lived! Team USA has done it again. It wasn’t as easy as some expected, with our men’s Olympic basketball squad being tested a couple of times during these summer games, but now that it’s all said and done our elite group is going home with the gold. Their final hurdle was the Spanish national team, one of the deepest in terms of NBA players with big names like the brothers Gasol and Serge Ibaka putting in work.
The rematch of the 2008 Beijing meeting between USA and Spain served up another nail-biter for basketball fans worldwide, with the Spanish squad bringing things within one point at the halfway mark. With their work cut out for them Team USA rose to the challenge; Kevin Durant pulled down 30, Kobe continued to be one of the hardest working players in the world, Chris Paul had his deft play on full display, and LeBron James closed out his incredible run over the past nine months with some huge highlight plays and an Olympic gold medal. Turning to the sneaker side of things there were a few notable shake ups: Chris Paul hit the court in the upcoming Jordan CP3.VI, Durant showed up in the NIKE iD version of the Nike Zoom KDIV ‘USA’ rather than the retail release, Kobe skipped out on his gold medal sneaks, and LeBron of course wowed the world with the debut of his Nike LeBron X (more on that later).
