The LunarSpider series is targeted specifically at the Japanese market, but has made a much wider impact thanks to eye-catching releases designed for the Gyakusou International Running Association by UNDERCOVER. The latest GIRA drop gives us two more distinct palettes on the latest model as the Nike LunarSpider+ 3 LT ‘Gyakusou’ hits the scene in Flat Pewter/Sangria/Gridiron and Pro Green/Blackened Blue/Dark Rust. With a cutting edge color palette to match the performance, these stand out even during a period of wild colorway and pattern variation, so have a closer look below, then grab from retailers like 290sqm.

One can look back to Nike Sportswear’s 2010 Athletics Far East capsule as a turning point where the earliest foreshadowing of today’s trend toward patterned designs met with subtle monochromatic palettes. And today we have a new trio of Japanese runners keeping the theme alive with some more traditional concealment patterns on three of the Swoosh’s most advanced Lunar foam-cushioned runners. The Nike LunarSpider R3, LT+ 2 and LunarSpeed Lite+ are all sleek LunarLon speedsters and they’re unified by the use of neutral camo uppers plus black branding and support structures. The original Lunarspider came through with a couple AFE-ish drops in early ’11, and you can let us know which silo/colors did it better after you’ve seen more of this new pack below.

While it might be argued that Americans favor Max Air and Japanese runners prefer Zoom cushioning, Lunar-cushioned Nike Running releases have thrived on both sides of the Pacific since LunarLite debuted at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Here in the States, the LunarGlide, LunarEclipse and a host of upgraded classics have swept us away with their featherweight comfort, and now the latest version of Japan’s flagship LunarLon runner is ready to show off its super-breathable Flywire build. The Nike Lunar Spider R3 is the first one in this series we haven’t seen courtesy of Jun Takahashi’s GIRA collective, but they still have all the visual flair of the UNDERCOVER founder’s best thanks to bold zebra striping on a couple of intense colorways. Check out both in greater detail below and stick with Sneaker News for word on wider availability now that they’ve arrived at Tokyo’s Nike Harajuku.
