Special edition sneakers are increasingly showing up with elaborate back stories and themes attached to helped build their mystique. This has been going on for years now of course, but in 2014 it seems to be at an all time high – nearly every stray Nike Basketball colorway or random pair of Dunks eventually is given a nickname (Either by the brand themselves or by sneaker enthusiasts across the internet). So what trends emerge in this process of associating shoes with objects and places relating to a player’s life, a partnering store’s history, or a lost bit of trivia regarding the model in question?

Did Nike SB ever do a better job of the 4/20 sneaker release than on the Nike SB Dunk “Skunk” High? That special release had them looking extra fuzzy and was pretty brazen with its tribute thanks to the skunk graphic that showed up for the insole. Riffing off that release is this Nike SB Dunk Low creation from Dank Customs, which goes the recent Nike SB route of switching up the height on a classic pair. Get a look at the results after the break and then tell us in the comments if you’d like to see this sort of pair hit retail.

Sneaker News clued you in on the ‘Hacky Sack Pack’ forthcoming from Nike Skateboarding last week, along with word that there could be a Dunk joining those Janoskis and Kostons we showed you (plus an as yet unseen Project BA).  It seemed to make sense because these Nike SB Dunk Lows have the same color code, and indeed, the woven multicolor material with black accents on a white sole works just as well on the Dunk as the aforementioned signatures.  Click in for a closer look and let us know if you’ll be kicking these into your sneaker circle this weekend.

what the dunk nike sb The First Nike What The Sneaker

There has been much “What The” talk this week as Nike Basketball officially unveiled the wild What the LeBron 11 and What the KD 6 styles. For those that don’t know, the Nike SB “What the Dunk” creation from back in 2007 was the first Swoosh shoe featuring a mash up style, with a ton of classic Dunk releases decorating the asymmetric set. It wasn’t until the Nike Kobe VII in 2012 that Nike Basketball eventually picked up on the theme, but since then, the “What The” has been a go-to concept for creating high energy around the shoes. Regarding the Dunks; these were incredibly limited in release (no more than 300, allegedly), and were sold in conjunction with the launch of Nike SB’s first film “Nothing but the Truth”, and released only where the film was being screened. Continue reading for a detailed look at this Nike SB classic, a brainchild of designer James Arizumi, and then check out how much a pair will fetch you today on eBay.
