The Nike Stefan Janoski is a wonder-shoe. It has transcended the sport of skateboarding and evolved into arguably the most ubiquitous signature sneaker Nike has ever created, but the best part about this massively successful sneaker is that you probably wouldn’t recognize the guy these were made for – even if he skated right by you on the street. That’s how the Vacaville, CA native probably likes it; he enjoys hopping to and from the local establishments, dabbling in photography, and honing his craft in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where he transplanted himself to three years ago to be with a special lady (no worries – they’re engaged now). Stefan’s amicable and disarming down-to-Earth attitude forced us to forget that he’s in fact a member of the most exclusive fraternity of professional athletes in the world and enabled us to spend the evening like it was any other hump-day – catching up on life with friends while filling ourselves with good food and drink. With his passion for his shoes and excitement behind Nike iD, we teamed up to create a Janoski iD design that were both proud of.

New York City is a mecca for many things. Basketball – check. Cultural diversity – for centuries. Art and music – you’ll find it everywhere. Skating – darn right. Over the last decade, Nike Skateboarding has enjoyed a meteoric rise from one of the most followed ‘cult’ sectors of the Swoosh to a rock-solid roster of Action Sports superstars, but the ‘how they got there’ hasn’t been much explored.
Nike Skateboarding kicked off a day-long exploration of the NYC skating scene by way of personal tours guided by the Nike Skateboarding team, giving the media an unforeseen insight into the daily routines of the skating stars while revealing some of their beginnings into the sport and how they came to join forces with Nike. We started at the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, took in a show at the Coleman Skate Park under the Manhattan Bridge, and finished off the day with a sick showcase and Nike Eric Koston 2 unveiling in the Chinatown/Financial District border. Nike iD officially welcomes Stefan Janoski to the exclusive family of iD-able Nike Action Sports footwear models, as the Nike Stefan Janoski Low Premium (no longer bearing the SB designation) is now available for full customization. Priced at $115, the Janoski iD boasts rich suede and leather uppers with the ability to create multiple-tone effect by varying up the swoosh, heel, contrast stitching on the toe, and upper piping. Grey hasn’t been quite as popular as black on the number of Nike Zoom Stefan Janoski, but we’ve seen quite a few such neutral looks over the past few months. 2012 kicked off with a Medium Grey Mid not too long after a Midnight Fog edition had released, and we got a unique fleece edition back in March, but this new blend of Clay and Union Grey might just be the cleanest of them all. While the status of the SB umbrella is still undergoing some minor construction, we do know for a fact that the heritage models like the Dunk, Blazer, etc. will still carry the prized ‘SB’ designation. This advanced preview brought to light by mrnikesb6 of the aforementioned Dunk shows that Nike SB will live fervently for another year thanks to these great new colorways and materials pictured, like the distressed ‘Taun-taun’-esque suede material and the combo of perforated suede and faux carbon fiber. Growing up in northern California, it seems Stefan Janoski developed a taste for the region’s rich red wines. We say that having seen the utterly novel ‘Vino Rosso’ design that made each pair a 1 of 1 with unique ring stains, and now this new pair whose color could have been derived from dipping the whole thing in a barrel of Merlot. The Nike SB Zoom Stefan Janoski looks great in Red Oxide with a tonal Swoosh and piping, and the richness of this tonal red blend serves to take the edge off the typically aggressive combination created by the black laces. Will the Nike SB Zoom Stefan Janoski ever reach its full potential? In recent times we’ve seen what the quirky silhouette is capable of given the right push, from the splattered effects of the ‘Vino Rosso’ pair to that group of customized creations from the folks at Salvation.
