Nike basketball was in a strange place in the mid-2000s. Today the brand dominates the hoops scene thanks to inking contracts with a trio of the most marketable players on the planet in LeBron, Kobe, and Kevin Durant, but there was a time in the not-so-distant past when Vince Carter resided on the top of the Nike mountain. That could’ve been due to a number of variables – his high flying marketability after the 2000 Dunk Contest and a post-Jordan basketball landscape that was desperately looking for its next star to emerge. The list of potential signature stars was seemingly endless, but one thing was for certain – the sneaker was going to include Nike Shox technology.

The unique, almost alien tech advancement has been missing in action for the most part in regards to courtside models today, but for almost a decade Nike championed the feature until blowing it off for a preferred Air Max or Zoom base. Be sure to stick with us after the click to get the latest NINE@NINE rundown of 9 Nike Shox basketball models that helped expand the reach of the famed Swoosh technology and be sure to check out the latest addition to the Shox family, the Shox TLX Mid SP.

20 Years Of Nike Basketball Design: Shox BB4 (2000)

nike shox bb4 2000 7 20 Years Of Nike Basketball Design: Shox BB4 (2000)

Any serious sneakerhead could tell you of Tinker Hatfield’s immense influence on sneaker design and the first few entries in Nike Basketball’s 20 year retrospective echoed this fact.  As we follow time forward into the middle ’90s, another legendary designer makes his name starting with Penny Hardaway and the revolutionary Foamposite line, then continues to build his star along with the new generation of freakishly athletic roundball stars.  Eric Avar‘s 2000 Nike Shox BB4 was itself the culmination of two decades of research, a shoe whose core theme could finally be realized thanks to the invention of improved foam fabrication.  The BB4′s unique ‘rocket and booster’ appearance proved Avar’s opinion that “every shoe should have one bold, iconic expression to it [and] sometimes you can get away with two,” and will forever be remembered as the shoe that made Fred Weis famous (did you get the ‘Dream Team’ pack retros?).  Click through to see more of Vince Carter’s Shox debut, let us know how they compare to the other milestone designs we’ve chronicled and stick with Sneaker News as we continue to chronicle Nike Basketball’s best on this side of the millennium.

Nike Basketball Retro “Black/Volt” Pack – Arriving at Retailers

July 16th, 2012 by | No comments

nike retro basketball black volt pack arriving at retailers Nike Basketball Retro Black/Volt Pack Arriving at Retailers

A little over a week ago, the Nike Sportswear ‘Dream Team’ Pack released after most stores missed the originally publicized July 1st drop date. That quartet of classic basketball silhouettes celebrates USA Basketball’s dominance with colorways like the ones you’ll see on display in London in a short while, its counterpart opting for an equally summer-friendly but altogether different appearance. The ‘Black Volt’ pack‘s approach is most apparent on the nearly all-neon Nike Zoom Huarache 2K4, though there’s no mistaking the black nubuck that makes up the majority of the Shox BB4, Air Force 180 and Air Force 1 High for a USAB style. Finshing the set is the Air More Uptempo that had previously been slated for a House of Hoops exclusive, but you’ll find all five of these available now at select NSW stockists on the revised July 21st release date.  via ITSB

Nike Shox BB4 “Dream Team”

nike shox bb 4 dream team 1 570x381 Nike Shox BB4 Dream Team

Vince Carter was the 1999 NBA Rookie of the Year and followed that up with arguably the most spectacular performance ever in his 2000 Slam Dunk Contest win. Vinsanity rocked AND1′s most memorable silhouette the Tai Chi on that occasion, but succeeding on a spotlight that big made Carter a target for brands beyond trash-talking t-shirt companies. Vince signed with Nike Basketball and has rocked the Swoosh ever since, or in the case of this first model with which he’s intimately connected, five Alpha Project dots. The Nike Shox BB4 returns in this USAB colorway that reminds us at the peak of his powers, ‘Air Canada’ was leaping over anyone in his path. The iconic dunk on Fred Weis at the 2000 Athens Games was Dream Team III’s signature moment and you’ll get to relive those memories as Nike Sportswear brings these back for Q3′s Dream Team collection. Click through for a better view, let us know where these rank on your Olympic shopping list and pre-order yours today from Titolo.
