loopwheeler nike waffle racer Loopwheeler x Nike Waffle Racer

The Nike Waffle Racer is one of the oldest runners in the Swoosh catalog that’s still getting the retro treatment, the model’s name hearkening back to the Hayward Field days when Bill Bowerman decided to make track shoes with an everyday kitchen appliance. This latest iteration is one that will feature a fleeced out build courtesy of Loopwheeler fabrics. Stay with us after the break for additional images on the new Nike Waffle Racer in question and keep your fingers crossed for a domestic release on this cozy collab pair of runners.

Nike Waffle Racer VNTG

1976 produced some notable (if underrated, by today’s standards) running shoes.  Nike’s LD, the adidas Montreal and New Balance 320 stand out as highlights from that bicentennial year, but no model better captures the spirit of ’76 quite like the Nike Waffle Racer.  Today, nearly forty years after the debut, we see the Waffle Racer VNTG take on one colorway each from classic and contemporary styles.  Both are timeless two-toned styles, but the grey/black edition appears as though it could have indeed been a first run release, while the Sport Turquoise edition is a distinctly modern phenomenon.  Click through so you can see which you like better, then be sure to check back with Sneaker News for US release info on these summer 2013 drops.

Nike gets involved with TEDxPortland once again as we get a look at a special pair of the Nike Waffle Racer created to commemorate the upcoming event on April 27th with the theme of “What If?”. In advance of the event, TEDxPortland has arranged a special scavenger hunt with destination clues and such, with one of the winning prices being the Nike Waffle Racer “What If?”, designed by Adam Welliver and Gemo Wong of Nike. The shoes feature the signature Red/Black colorway associated with the event, with “What If?” significations on the heel, tongue, and lace-tips and a sick insole design from local graphic designer Jake Holloman. Check out the detailed photos below, and if you’re in the area, join in on the TEDxPortland scavenger hunt by RSVPing on the TEDxPortland event page.

Nike Waffle Racer VNTG – Size? Exclusives

nike waffle racer vntg size exclusives1 Nike Waffle Racer VNTG Size? Exclusives

We saw plenty of the similarly soled Challenger retros, several Air Waffle releases and a ton of other classic runners resurrected during the time that J.Crew’s collaborative drop was the only Nike Waffle Racer issued.  That roughly three-year quiet period ends today with word of a new VNTG series drop that refreshes one of the early Nike designs that got its unique traction pattern from Bill Bowerman’s early ’70s experiments with a waffle iron.  One opts for the Oregon Ducks look while another features an equally classic Cal Bears-leaning palette, and both of these 1976 throwbacks will hit Size? with 500 pairs for each colorway next month.  Stick with Sneaker News for release info and check out some additional images below in the meantime.
