It’s hard to imagine today’s one-and-done ‘college’ basketball players having much loyalty to their schools (unless you enroll, dominate and win an NCAA crown like Carmelo Anthony). If a guy like Kyrie Irving becomes an elite superstar with his own signature line, surely we’d see a Duke colorway, but since Irving only played a handful of games in Durham, even near-Blue Devil Kobe Bryant could be seen to be just as connected to the school. Kobe skipped college to go straight to the pros, so instead of the various Duke colorways accompanying Kobe homecomings, we look to the annual Lower Merion High School Aces PE to rep for the Mamba’s alma mater. This new Nike Zoom Kobe VI is slated to hit US retailers on Saturday, September 10th, and they’re already shipping from Hong Kong’s RMK.

It’s common practice for NBA players to get PE’s that pay homage to their NCAA days, but what about the select few who skipped that step on their way to the big leagues? Well in Kobe’s case you just go back another step to high school, which in this case is Lower Merion High. The Aces have been fortunate enough to receive a lot of Kobe love and this is another chapter in that saga, the Nike Zoom Kobe VI done up in the school’s colors with a nice ‘Ace’ logo hit near the heel clip. The sneaker comes in a mixture of cool greys, with varsity crimson for the swoosh and accenting. They’ll be hitting stores just in time for the back to school season, dropping on September 10th. Here we have a second look at the upcoming release, which featured the signature tonal pink colorway and the breast cancer ribbon located on the heel of the shoe. The Batman vs. Joker theme is one of the more popular subplots of the Nike Zoom Kobe line thanks to the wide popularity of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight renditions on the big screen. While we haven’t seen a Dark Knight Kobe VI yet, these could very well be the counterpart to the Zoom Kobe VI ‘Chaos’ that dropped just a few months ago; it features a Black upper with blue accents on the upper with a red Kobe Shozoku logo – a similar color combination to the Nike Zoom Kobe V Dark Knight version. A prime example of the precision possible when utilizing synthetic materials, the Nike Zoom Kobe VI ‘Lakers Gradient’ is one of the most visually stimulating colorways of what’s been an epic run from Kobe Bryant’s sixth Nike Basketball signature. Much like the Zoom Kobe IV ‘Gradient’ and ZK5 ’5 Rings’, these fade from purple to gold, though unlike in previous seasons, the Lakers’ playoff performance has us wondering if the treatment echoes LA’s slow fade from glory. Earlier this week Sneaker News showed you two brand new colorways of the Nike Zoom Kobe VI – one of which was the ‘Lakers Gradient’. The upper features a uniquely blocked color gradient that travels primarily from medial to lateral rather than anterior to posterior, using the two signature Los Angeles Lakers colors as the base. As you can see, the yellow is painted rather coarsely adnd only inbetween the TPU scales rather than over them, creating a strange double-layered format of color-blocking. Other fine details include the translucent white outsole, which matches the white midsole, swoosh and heel-counter. Should the 2011 NBA Season begin on schedule, you can certainly expect the Black Mamba to don these for the earlier part of the 82-game campaign.
