Penny Hardaway once got on the ‘Memphis Express’ – that is, he wore this PE colorway of his Zoom Rookie back in 2011 for a celebrity All-Star game. Much like the ‘Memphis Blues’ aka the ‘Game Royal’, it appears that this once made-for-Penny will be flipped to a made-for-all, as the tonal ‘Varsity Red’ colorway will in fact hit retail sometime later this year. The Zoom Rookie buzz has slowed down a bit until Gentry confirmed a September release of the Galaxy version, but on top of the Galaxy and this Varsity Red release, there is in fact another ‘Premium’ Zoom Rookie build (priced at $215) awaiting us this September. We’ve been wondering if the ‘Galaxy’ edition might make it to retail since Penny Hardaway himself was spotted wearing them this May (and again in June), but since that revelation, two Nike Zoom Rookie LWPs have set their sights on store shelves. This ‘Matte Red’ Zoom Rookie shares its monochromatic look with the ‘Memphis Blues’ pairs that’ve popped up early in limited numbers, but unlike that glossy Tigers-inspired look and the ‘Memphis Reds’ to which they’re both closely related, this pair opts for a more satiny finish. The result is like a whole new chapter in the Zoom Rookie story and one that we can’t help but think deserves a few more pages. One of the earlier ‘one-of-ones’ from the life cycle of the Nike Zoom Rookie LWP was the ‘Memphis Express’ PE that Penny Hardaway wore during the ‘Raising Dollars for Scholars’ charity basketball tournament back in August of 2011. While even rumors of a release haven’t made so much of a peep yet, the developing story of the ‘Memphis Blues’ Zoom Rookie, which began popping up overseas, led us to wonder if the Zoom Rookie had one final push before giving away to the Air Penny V. Today, we’re hit with another mysterious update from the LWP – this tonal-red colorway that features a matte finish rather than the glossy sheen from the ‘Memphis Express’ PE. Will these release?
