As far as superhero squads go we’re fairly sure that the general public is still focused on the Avengers at the moment, the massive buzz from their onscreen debut swelling once again with a sequel now confirmed. Let’s not forgot though that another Marvel Comics squad held down the silver-screen years before them, that squad being the X-Men. This customized version of the Nike Zoom Rookie ‘Memphis Blues’ sees the consistent coloring used to pay homage to one Hank McCoy, aka Beast of the X-Men. Aside from the awesome hand painted look put on by Rebel Aire, the sneakers also get some Jason Negron Sole Swap work with the LED implants for the various pods. Click through check out the Nike Zoom Rookie “Beast” custom and give us your thoughts in the comments below and hit up Sole Swap or Rebel Aire to order your own X-Men custom.

The upcoming Nike Zoom Rookie ‘Galaxy’ got a bit more interesting when we showed you a special version of the Penny hybrid shoe that featured ‘glow in the dark’ moon pods on the upper. Previously, the pods were a solid black color, so there was some confusion as to which would be the released version or if one or the other was a limited edition; it turns out the the ‘glow-pod’ version is in fact a collaboration with Sole Collector, which participated in another Penny-centric collaboration last year. Behind the velcro patch on the tongue is the Sole Collector logo embroidered on the tongue, a feature that can be left hidden or open depending on your own preference. With this new development now surfaced, which version do you prefer – black or glow?

The most recent pair of ‘Galaxy’ Nike Zoom Rookies we saw earlier this week displayed a soft blue on the Air Flight One-inspired pods as an indication that they glow in the dark just like the sole on February’s legendary Air Foamposite One. And just when you think that an early production model might reveal the final result, the same retailer known for getting its hands on heat months before everyone else shows us a different build. This ‘Galaxy’ Zoom Rookie opts for black pods instead, which has a nice balancing effect but might not be quite as exciting as either the other pair’s blue ‘natural’ state (and definitely can’t outshine the GITD capability). Still, it’s not simply cramming a bunch of details into a single sneaker that makes for a standout, and the Zoom Rookie itself represents a shining example of how to gracefully combine selections from a buffet of tasty details. So you make the call, Sneaker News readers: glow-in-the-dark or black pods on the ‘Galaxy’ Zoom Rookie LWP? The latter is depicted in greater detail below, and be sure to stick with us to find out which version releases, and exactly when.

Remember how the Nike Air Foamposite One ‘Galaxy’ actually had some separate samples showing off a slightly altered version of the starry printed upper? Well as it turns out the next sneaker in line to get the ‘Galaxy’ look the Nike Zoom Rookie has some differing versions floating out there as well. What’s the difference? This tweaked version of the sneaker comes sporting a more thorough glow in the dark touch, the luminous treatment hitting on the pods that run along the side in place of the plain old black that we’ve seen recently. Click through to check out this alternate version of the ‘Galaxy’ Nike Zoom Rookie and stick with Sneaker News for word on which one will actually arrive on the September release date.

Amidst all the signature sneaker hoopla that’s going on (LeBron X, KD V, CP3.VI), let’s not forget that retired Penny Hardaway and his upcoming Air Penny V, slated for a debut this November. Of course, most of Penny’s sneakers don’t see widespread in-game use, but the Penny V might change the trend of Penny’s being a lifestyle-only selection. Do you think the Galaxy Zoom Rookies will see any airtime? Rajon Rondo already broke them out once in a game (albeit the All-Star Game), so what are your thoughts on this highly-anticipated September release being a future ‘NBA Feet’ feature? Remember, these have been confirmed for a release next month and are likely to be picked up quickly, so let us know if you’re eyeing the Galaxy Rookies and check out the selling price for this pair from el-store on eBay.

Penny Hardaway once got on the ‘Memphis Express’ – that is, he wore this PE colorway of his Zoom Rookie back in 2011 for a celebrity All-Star game. Much like the ‘Memphis Blues’ aka the ‘Game Royal’, it appears that this once made-for-Penny will be flipped to a made-for-all, as the tonal ‘Varsity Red’ colorway will in fact hit retail sometime later this year. The Zoom Rookie buzz has slowed down a bit until Gentry confirmed a September release of the Galaxy version, but on top of the Galaxy and this Varsity Red release, there is in fact another ‘Premium’ Zoom Rookie build (priced at $215) awaiting us this September. What could it be? We’ll keep you in the know, so in the meantime, browse through this gallery of detailed images of the Varsity Red and let us know what you think. Photos: sole-awesome
