When it comes to Anfernee ’Penny’ Hardaway’s NBA career, the most asked question by far would be a hypothetical with a jist like, “What if injuries hadn’t robbed Penny of more years on top of the league?” Hardaway’s was a tough path and it was nearly stolen away even earlier, when a little over two decades ago, he was struck in the foot by stray gunfire connected to an armed robbery. The same town dangerous enough to put his life in jeopardy was also where Penny played his way into the national spotlight, and this latest colorway of what is arguably Nike Sportswear’s finest hybrid design to date, celebrating his deep connections to western Tennessee’s urban center. The Nike Zoom Rookie LWP ’Memphis Blues’ is sweeter than an order of BBQ Spaghetti from Cozy Corner, an all-blue dish whose trendy palette happens to coincide perfectly with the ’1c’ logo Penny wore during his best years in Orlando. The ‘Memphis Blues’ tune is slowly beginning to play out, because after we showed you a detailed set of images earlier this week, we’re getting hit with some more images of this purported ’1-of-1′, which clearly is far from being the one-of. Royal Blue is to Penny as Varsity Red is the MJ, and this colorway definitely pulls no punches as it goes ‘Raging Blue’ with the tonal colorway on hte upper, with the translucent outsole and 1-Cent logo offering the only contrast. No word on a release of these Memphis Blues just yet, but we’ll keep you updated because it certainly appears that these are beginning to pop up with reason. Your thoughts on this colorway? After the introduction of the Nike Zoom Rookie LWP last year, the Air Penny legacy writes a new story for 2012 in the form of the Air Flight One re-release and the Air Penny V – Penny Hardaway’s fifth official signature sneaker. However, the Zoom Rookie continues to be a recurring figment this year, with several new releases, the ‘Galaxy’ customs, and most recently, the actual Galaxy version that Penny casually wore around. A new detailed look at the tonal Royal Blue ‘Memphis Blues’ PE is upon us today, and while a release isn’t confirmed, the fact that these are popping up yet again could hint at one as these were previously known to be a 1-of-1. Not many things can set the sneaker world ablaze like February’s release of the Nike Air Foamposite One ‘Galaxy’ did. One could argue that the mayhem that ensued on the night of February 24th is what forced Nike into a corner and compelled them to move forward with the controversial changes to the release procedures, and while it will certainly take some time for the pros and cons of those changes to be fairly assessed. Since the Galaxy Foams released, we’ve seen the speckled black and purple graphic take shape in a number of sneakers in custom form, with the Nike Zoom Rookie LWP being one of the first to make that attempt. Here we have a first look at the Nike Zoom Rookie LWP ‘Galaxy’ in its official form, and you can bet your own Galaxys that these are legit because they’ve been spotted on none other than the Foam don Penny Hardaway. While the Foamposite One utilized a darker ‘deep space’ backdrop, these Zoom Rookies are considerably pinker at the toe and the heel. Glow-in-the-dark treatment can be spotted on the outsole, but not on the moon/bowling-ball pods like they were on the Air Flight One ‘Galaxy’. We already gave you a look at Mache’s Zoom Rookie LWP ‘Galaxy’ Customs, but does this version have his original beat? What looks familiar is the obvious – the airbrushed ‘Galaxy’ graphic pattern on the upper – but Expression Airbrush, who completed this project, added a Glow-In-The-Dark treatment to the moon-pods on the upper, adding dots to give them a moon-like appeal with the accentuated spots acting as ‘craters’. The speckle, along with the Penny logos, Swoosh, and stripe on the tongue are given the Glow treatment for a sick futuristic appeal in complete darkness. Penny Hardaway won Olympic gold with Dream Team II at the 1996 Atlanta Games, but we haven’t seen any of his Nike Sportswear retro and hybrid series yet connected with this summer’s USAB blowout. Instead, NSW’s going to be emphasizing Penny in the fourth quarter of 2012 along with one of his teammates from the XXVI Olympiad. Moving left to right in the image above, we see our first glimpse of the new Nike Air Penny V that seeks to continue Anfernee’s legacy while introducing some new twists. You can also count on a copper Zoom Rookie LWP as well as the Air Flight 1 joining a couple of older looking designs that seem inspired by David Robinson‘s Air Force 180 High (though they seem to lack an inflation system of any sort), perhaps similar to the PR1 we saw imitating the classic Air Pressure. The arrival of the Nike Air Flight One last weekend hopefully served as a bit of a history lesson, letting heads grab one of the pieces that inspired the current wave of the Nike Zoom Rookie LWP. This weekend it’s back to the regularly scheduled programming, with the black/anthracite colorway set to release on Saturday, March 3rd. The Foamposite frenzy has seen a lot of people begging for a blacked out silhouette to hit retail again, and for the time being this pair is the closest thing we’ve got.
