We won’t go so far as to say that his range of Nike Sportswear sneaker offerings is more popular than during that epic early/mid-’90s run when he played Robin to Shaq’s Batman, but there’s no understating the popularity of Penny Hardawy’s signature series. The Nike Zoom Rookie LWP is the second hybrid NSW created from the Air Penny series and its offshoots, this new Dynamic Blue and Wolf Grey colorup a nice middle ground between the legendary ‘Orlando’ colorways and the variety of grey tones that have been oh so popular these past couple years. It took a while for us to finally see proof of the inevitable when the Nike Zoom Rookie LWP only recently showed up for previews in its ‘blackout’ edition, but maybe that’s because Nike Sportswear wanted to take care of all the other basics first. We got a couple of blue pairs referencing Penny Hardaway’s brilliant mid-’90s stint with the Orlando Magic and a couple white/black designs including one glow-in-the-dark Halloween release. This, then, is the ‘other’ white and black Zoom Rookie, a pair that rounds out the 2011 releases with a crisp high contrast look that could have been a perfect thematic expression of either equinox. Instead, we get them on the winter solstice one year before the world’s supposed to end, which is probably best since you’ll have a bit of extra time to rock the full range of adult sizes from NikeStore or get your pair on eBay.

Any basketball sneaker worth its salt is bound to end up in a blackout colorway, and in the case of one of Nike Sportswear’s finest hybrid designs to date, it just happens to be a bit more expressive than on most. That’s because the Nike Zoom Rookie LWP‘s black and Anthracite colorup has so much shine on its Foamposite sections, that they give off the sense of being cast in a mineral straight from the earth. So in the right light, these are one of the ‘brightest’ blackout sneakers in recent memory, but in other conditions they’re as dark as a coal mine. The ‘Memphis Express‘ and ‘Memphis Blues‘ PE colorways of the Nike Zoom Rookie were special requests made by Penny Hardaway – he wanted matching shoes for his upcoming charity exhibition basketball games. Those 1-of-1 PEs are in the sole ownership of Penny, but the most recent Zoom Rookie PE, a White/Silver pair worn by Penny during an All-Star charity game in China (which featured Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman), was given to a lucky spectator. This latest Penny-only PE features a White Foamposite upper with matte silver pods with a translucent outsole. To top it off, the Zoom Rookie PEs were autographed by Penny himself! The Nike Penny line has claimed ownership of Foamposite material, prominently featuring it in the Air 1/2 Cent and on 2011′s Zoom Rookie. The foamy material looks exceptionally well with lustrous tones, like the metallic Anthracite we see here. Sneaker News actually showed you this colorway not long ago, but here we have a detailed set of angles that’ll surely make the Nike Zoom Rookie LWP a repeat hit in 2012. It’s hard to follow up such great releases like the Glow In The Dark or even the simply-made Binary Blue, but Anthracite/Black is slick enough to make these a must-have when they do release. 2011 will close out on a high note with the White/Black colorway of the Nike Zoom Rookie, but 2012′s got some goodies in store for us as well. In addition to the ‘Dynamic Blue’ colorway, that seems to be releasing after the New Year, this solid Black/Anthracite colorway will also arrive in the coming months. Featuring a combination of a lustrous dark grey Anthracite tone with black on the upper, this two-toned combination emanates that hardcore Foamposite appeal while accentuating the flowing lines of the Zoom Rookie LWP design. The designers over at Nike Basketball worked magic yet again with the Nike Zoom Rookie LWP, seamlessly bonding three different sneakers into one polished unit. Already touted as one of the best sneakers of the year, the Zoom Rookie will finish off 2011 with one final release – the White/Black colorway that is currently slated for a 12/21/11 release. Combining a simple White/Black upper with a translucent outsole, we imagine these to be a hit on the NBA and NCAA courts – maybe sneakerhead DeJuan Blair of the San Antonio Spurs will rock these once the NBA season starts. With the huge success of both the Nike Air 1/2 Cent and the recently released Nike Zoom Rookie LWP, it’s almost a sure bet that Nike Sportswear is working on another Air Penny hybrid shoe. In case they’re not, you’d better grab as many as possible, because the Air Penny line, despite its short life, is one of the best Nike has ever produced. The Zoom Rookie LWP is definitely among one of the best Penny-attributed sneakers ever made, and this new colorway of Dynamic Blue introduces a new attitude to the Penny heritage, which we often see in Royal Blue (and rarely in another shade of blue). There hasn’t been finite release information for these just yet (although you have the White/Black colorway to look forward to this December), so check out the new images below and cop a pair in advance from el-store on eBay.
