While the Air Flight One is headed toward the stars via Orlando, the spectacular hybrid model that was most young sneakerheads’ first exposure to its signature pods is headed in the opposite direction. Given their history (first Shaq in ’96, then the ’09 Finals), you might think that’d be LA, but we’re actually talking about a colorway that always does well everywhere, any time of year. The Nike Zoom Rookie is ready to debut its ’Blackout’ colorup, a subtly stunning mix of Anthracite Foamposite, black nubuck and the ever-present translucent outsole. These have the unenviable task of following the aptly named ‘Dynamic Blue’ joints to retail, but there’s little cause for worry about betting on swift sales when these hit select Nike Sportswear retailers on March 3rd. via Kicks-crew

The Nike Zoom Rookie LWP features the kind of bold lines and eye-catching materials that make it anything but ordinary, so what happens when you apply one of the most basic colorways possible? Turns out, a ‘Blackout’ Zoom Rookie does nothing to diminish this Nike Sportswear hybrid from breaking necks, and they might even be more impactful in a sense because of the relatively unexpected way the Foamposite sections jump out at you under the right lighting. We’ve already seen two different white/black colorways released to great commercial success, and with the popularity of both Foamposite and Air Penny retros in recent years, there’s little doubt this one will be similarly well accepted. We won’t go so far as to say that his range of Nike Sportswear sneaker offerings is more popular than during that epic early/mid-’90s run when he played Robin to Shaq’s Batman, but there’s no understating the popularity of Penny Hardawy’s signature series. The Nike Zoom Rookie LWP is the second hybrid NSW created from the Air Penny series and its offshoots, this new Dynamic Blue and Wolf Grey colorup a nice middle ground between the legendary ‘Orlando’ colorways and the variety of grey tones that have been oh so popular these past couple years. It took a while for us to finally see proof of the inevitable when the Nike Zoom Rookie LWP only recently showed up for previews in its ‘blackout’ edition, but maybe that’s because Nike Sportswear wanted to take care of all the other basics first. We got a couple of blue pairs referencing Penny Hardaway’s brilliant mid-’90s stint with the Orlando Magic and a couple white/black designs including one glow-in-the-dark Halloween release. This, then, is the ‘other’ white and black Zoom Rookie, a pair that rounds out the 2011 releases with a crisp high contrast look that could have been a perfect thematic expression of either equinox. Instead, we get them on the winter solstice one year before the world’s supposed to end, which is probably best since you’ll have a bit of extra time to rock the full range of adult sizes from NikeStore or get your pair on eBay.

Any basketball sneaker worth its salt is bound to end up in a blackout colorway, and in the case of one of Nike Sportswear’s finest hybrid designs to date, it just happens to be a bit more expressive than on most. That’s because the Nike Zoom Rookie LWP‘s black and Anthracite colorup has so much shine on its Foamposite sections, that they give off the sense of being cast in a mineral straight from the earth. So in the right light, these are one of the ‘brightest’ blackout sneakers in recent memory, but in other conditions they’re as dark as a coal mine. The Nike Zoom Rookie LWP kicked off with the sick Glow-In-The-Dark colorway, but if you missed out on that release, the White/Black ‘Oreo’ is the perfect second option. They appear pretty much the same (sans the glow), but do have a whiter Foamposite upper compared to Luminous Pearl. It’ll be tough to fit any extra kicks into your Holiday sneaker shopping, but it’ll be hard to turn these down. Retailers like BXSports have begun to receive their stock of this late-December release, so check out the new close-up shots after the jump and let us know if you’re looking to cop the ‘Oreo’ Zoom Rookies in the comments below. Sneaker News just scooped you on the December 21st release date for the white/black colorway, which means that’s almost certainly the final Nike Zoom Rookie LWP drop of 2011. So while we’re waiting for days to get longer after the winter solstice, we’ll also be eagerly awaiting the arrival of yet more brightness in the form of the ‘Dynamic Blue’ Zoom Rookies. This palette has a frosty appearance that’d be perfect any time during the winter season, though their vibrant primary color is also the kind of thing you’d expect to see during the hottest summer days. So you’re looking now at one of those shoes that you can not only keep in your rotation, but one that’ll continue to break necks even as they age. Halloween in mid-November? Anything’s possible at Foot Locker’s House of Hoops, where a concept catering to hardcore basketball fans and sneakerheads has now expanded to most of the largest US cities. The latest HoH exclusive will have you remembering all the fun you had dressing up in costumes in late October, this new black and Max Orange Nike Zoom Rookie about as close as the Air Penny super-hybrid can get to a jack-o-lantern. They’ll light up the morning as malls across the country open when “Kicksmas comes early” to all House of Hoops locations right around the time the early bird lap-walking crew calls it a day.
