A Japanese cult favorite that got a bit of much deserved attention here in the States after Jason Kidd returned to Nike, the Nike Zoom Uptempo V has just dropped in a couple new colorways. Both can be seen to tie in with J-Kidd’s Hall of Fame career, with one of these Zoom Flight Vs rocking a Phoenix Suns ‘home’ look and a black leather pair whose gradients manifest the tones that glimmered from the OG edition’s distinctive midsole jewel. Jason Kidd has two Olympic gold medals to go along with his hard-earned NBA Championship ring, and he might have captured a third gold had Dream Team II not been so stocked with veteran talent.  So instead of following up his Rookie of the Year season with an All-Star starting appearance in 1996 and a trip to Atlanta that summer, Kidd just got overlooked by USA Basketball and was shipped out of Dallas soon into his third season.  This new Nike Zoom Uptempo V ‘USA’, then, represents a trip back in time where J-Kidd might have taken his ’96-97 signature to an early debut at the centennial Games.  So perhaps it’s poetic if unfortunate that this AP favorite might not even make it to US Nike Sportswear retailers, especially considering it doesn’t seem to be lumped in with all their other USAB celebratory fare we’re expecting in the coming months.  Let us know if you’ll buy these if they make it stateside and stick with Sneaker News for updates on all the Olympic retros this summer.  Photos: HC

Is the Nike Zoom Uptempo V poised for a comeback? The super flashy black and pinks had people talking, Jason Kidd is back balling in them, and we know that a ‘USAB’ colorway is on its way. With all of those factors coming together and building a bit of a buzz, now would be as good a time as any for the sneaker to make a lasting impression on stateside heads. Athletic outfitters are gearing up for the 2012 Olympic Games, scheduled to go underway in London this summer. The Olympic Games are without question the platform of platforms when it comes to sports supremacy, and notable brands have taken advantage of the spotlight by producing some great collections of apparel. Now that Jason Kidd is back on team Nike upon the expiration of his deal with Peak, should we anticipate a stronger focus on retro releases from his stable of signature sneaks? That remains to be seen, but for the time being we’ve got a new colorway of his Nike Zoom Uptempo V, a favorite in the Asian market that doesn’t see to much play stateside. This wild get up for the already unorthodox shoe brings a hot pink look to the wavy midsole construction, along with some patent leather hits up top and of course the requisite icy soles. Turf spikes on a basketball sneaker?!  Still seems unconventional fifteen years later, but then again, the ‘bugeyed’ Zoom Flight 95 that preceded the Nike Zoom Uptempo V as Jason Kidd’s signature sneaker wasn’t exactly run of the mill, either.  Kidd has continued his avant garde approach to kicks and become the leader of a generation of aging stars who signed with Asian footwear brands, so this model formerly known as the Zoom Flight Five preserves his legacy with the Swoosh even as his first and only NBA championship was won wearing Peaks.  This red-on-white colorway best matches the uniforms from his days as a New Jersey Net when Kidd got his first peek at the Finals, and you can see more of this Japanese favorite when you click below.  Let us know how these have held up a decade and a half after their debut and if you wanna get in on the unique look before they hit Nike Sportswear retailers, get with Air-Randy.
