For better or worse, 2012 was a defining year for the sneaker world and all that it encompasses. It was a year that saw certain shoes throw the laws of supply and demand so out of whack, that brands and retailers had to completely rethink the way they sell shoes to the public just to keep the peace. If you were willing to put in some legwork or, better yet, had the right connections, it was a banner year for sneaker enthusiasts. “Must-have” releases seemed to be at an all-time high and nearly every weekend offered up some sort of temptation for consumers. 2012 saw the release of some of the most eagerly anticipated and passionately sought-after sneakers the game had ever seen and it’s safe to say that things will never be the same again.
In between those, there were plenty of other desirable targets along the way, from the special limited editions and collaborations to beloved Retro returns and promising new designs and innovations. There were even a few certified sleeper hits that organically carved out their place among the year’s best releases. Due to an exponentially expanding consumer base and a heightened level of product awareness, you might not have been able to get your hands on every shoe you hunted for in 2012, but there was certainly no shortage of solid alternatives ripe for the picking in their absence.

Ready for some more Nike Tennis fire? The Nike Tennis Flame Collection pays tribute to the original “burning ball” logo that was seen on the Air Tech Challenge, sparking a mass collection of energetic and fiery colorways of footwear and apparel. This 2012 version relives that early-90′s heat with the Nike Tennis Flame Pack, featuring the Zoom Vapor Tour 9, Air Max Courtballistec 4.3, and Zoom Breathe 2k13 in a fierce colorway inspired by that burning ball logo. We recently previewed these as the ‘Agassi’-inspired releases (which is accurate), and it appears that the shoes and the t-shirt will hit stores on November 1st with Federer wearing his Tour 9s in London. A gallery is right ahead so take a look!

Andre Agassi had a variety of pioneering endorsements, a model/actress wife and plenty of Grand Slam titles of his own (not to mention the Olympic Gold), but when you look at the number of major championships Roger Federer has amassed, it’s downright silly to argue that Andre or any other man has ever played tennis better, for longer. Federer favors traditional looks on court, but his Nike Zoom Vapor Tour 9 by Tinker Hatfield gets an extra jolt by borrowing a recognizable colorway from the mulleted megastar’s fourth and final Air Tech Challenge signature. These new ZVT9s opt for a darker base than those ATCIVs, which leaves the signature heel graphic feeling less like playful irreverence and more like an unstoppable ace streaking past a helpless receiver. Let us know how these compare to Agassi’s originals and Rafa’s similar Air Max Courtballistec 4.3 and stick with Sneaker News because these should arrive at select retailers shortly.

While the overall popularity of contemporary tennis shoes hasn’t reached the levels of Nike’s earliest Tennis endeavors with the Air Trainer 1 and Agassi line, the footwear line-up – namely Federer’s Zoom Vapor Tour 9 and Nadal’s Air Max Courtballistec series – is the undisputed number-one in the world. Two of the sport’s most successful athletes wearing the Swoosh will lead to some outstanding products, but we’re in for a special treat with this sick duet of Nike Tennis models colored up “Agassi” style. Both models feature a unique splatter graphic on the heel, reminiscent of the punchy graphics seen on Agassi’s Tech Challenge series. These are slated to release in early November, so check out the gallery below and let us know if you think Nike should toy around more with a “old meets new” concept for these underrated tennis models.

If there was ever a time for adidas to take advantage of Andy Murray, it’s right this instant. The British tennis star might have enough momentum to one day have an ObyO capsule that’s as popular with the mod set as Fred Perry’s eponymous label, but Muzza has a long way to go before he overtakes the man with whom he split the summer’s big London tourneys. Don’t forget that Roger Federer defeated Murray two months earlier at Wimbledon, and don’t sleep on your chance to get in on the seventeen-time Grand Slam champion’s latest signature release. The Nike Zoom Vapor 9 Tour was built for the GOAT in ‘Day’ and ‘Night’ colorups for the recently concluded US Open, and it looks like they’re available for a short time at select NikeTown locations. Let us know how these compare to the more obviously New York-inspired edition and stick with Sneaker News for more from the Nike Tennis greats.

The 2012 US Open is off and running in Flushing, Queens as the world’s greatest tennis stars convened once again for this annual tradition. One emphatic focus is on perhaps the greatest of all-time in Roger Federer, who shattered records with his seventeenth title earlier this year, and his signature Nike sneaker known as the Zoom Vapor Tour 9. To celebrate Federer’s arrival in the Big Apple, Nike has created a limited edition release of the Vapor Tour 9 in a Royal Blue and Orange New York Mets color scheme with the Nike NYC logo on the tongue and insole. A very limited quantity will be sold at Packer Shoes at Noon tomorrow, with each pair accompanied by an amazing NYC Tennis t-shirt designed by UNDERCRWN (a play of Mr. Met, tennis, and the brand’s signature graphics). $175 will get you the shoes and the t-shirt, but the tees will also be sold separately once the limited run of the shoes sell out. More of the Nike Zoom Vapor Tour 9 ‘NYC’ and the t-shirt below, so take a look and let us know if you’ll be trying to grab a pair as Federer tries to add #18 to his belt at the US Open!
