If you follow Paul Rodriguez on social media circles, you’ve no doubt seen the skater post up a couple images of the Nike Skateboarding Safari tour bus. Nike SB is finally shedding a little bit of light on the bus with this spot, which features a group of guides promising to take folks on a tour around LA to put and give them a slice of that real deal street skate life. How many Nike athletes can you name that have made it to a seventh signature model? The list isn’t very long and the fact that Paul Rodriguez is about to receive his speaks not only to the prolific dominance of his sport over the span of his Nike tenure, but also his sustained marketability and star power as an athlete endorser. P-Rod came on board in the mid-2000′s just as the Nike SB division was really beginning to explode in popularity and quickly became the face of the brand as the honored recipient of its very first signature model. Since Paul’s arrival way back then, the SB family has made some notable additions along the way, bringing on living legend, Eric Koston and a few others like Stefan Janoski, whose signature shoe has become a contemporary classic since it debuted a few years back. But despite some enticing new names and models, there’s nothing quite like being the first. Much like Michael Jordan’s early shoes came to define the Nike basketball category and what it meant to be a signature athlete, P-Rod will always be “the guy” when it comes to Nike Skateboarding.

The Nike Paul Rodriguez signature line is ready to roll seven models deep as we get a first look at a high-top version of the Nike P-Rod 7. There’s a clear ‘Retro’ inspiration to this design, mixing in some newer LunarLon tech with a silhouette that sprinkles in some Dunk High curvature (accentuated by the OG ‘Goldenrod’ colorway) for what wraps up to be the closest thing to an updated Dunk we’ve ever seen. Some other details like the unique graphic applique on the heel, the leather/suede mix on the upper, and the perforations in key areas on the toe and upper (Nike P-Rods are always well ventilated). Nike is teaming up with First Lady Michelle Obama in an effort to help the kids of America get involved in physical activity once again at school. Mrs. Obama will get together with Nike CEO Mark Parker and superstar athletes including Serena Williams, Allyson Felix, Bo Jackson, Sarah Reinertsen, Colin Kaepernick, Ashton Eaton, Gabby Douglas, and Paul Rodriguez for a major announcement regarding the new Nike-backed initiative today at 12 noon EST out in Chicago. Check out the accompanying video right after the jump that introduces the Michelle Obama/Nike plan and watch for the big reveal to go down today.

Nike Skateboarding didn’t start the sneaker craze, but it was certainly the catalyst that made ‘collecting’ into an insane hobby. Already boasting a talented team of riders like Reese Forbes and Danny Supa, Nike SB didn’t go the signature sneaker route until the brand signed on young phenom Paul Rodriguez. Did you celebrate “Go Skateboarding Day” this past Saturday? Nike Skateboarding’s team or riders enjoyed the unofficial holiday by skating through China with cameras mounted on their chests, presenting the high-action street sport to a nation not very forward with skating. Follow Nike SB riders Paul Rodriguez, Eric Koston, Sean Malto, Alex Olson, Stefan Janoski, and Omar Salazar as they travel through the streets and parks while giving us a direct point-of-view of their travels. Eric Koston, Stefan Janoski, Omar Salazar… the Nike SB line boasts an impressive roster of talent with their current lineup of signature models, but in the beginning, there was only one. Despite having six signature Nike models under his belt and just capturing his 4th X Games gold medal, when it comes to his skateboarding success and high-profile sponsorship endorsements, Paul Rodriguez Jr. still feels like a kid who “hit the lotto.” The humble 27 year-old superstar is quite aware of how lucky he is to be living the dream, and there’s no question that he has put in the hard work to get where he is – and not just work on his board.
Paul likes to get very hands on with the design of his signature Nike shoes and it’s clear that he goes all out to ensure the best performance possible. P-Rod knows his shoes inside and out. He knows what he’s looking for and what to ask for, and the results are evident in a solid catalog of shoes that he feels keep getting better and better. We recently had the chance to catch up with Paul to chat about his new shoe, the recently released P-Rod 6, as well as his early days with Nike SB, his all-time favorite sneakers and the eventual legacy of the Nike P-Rod line.
