Same story, different shoes? On Monday, Sneaker News showed you the upcoming October 2012 release of the Nike Air Flight One in Black/White and the interesting back-story and gave the an unintended infamy in the history of Michael Jordan. Before Michael borrowed Penny’s shoes, it appears that Penny dipped in MJ’s stash as we get a rare look at this Air Jordan IX Player Exclusive made for the Penny Hardaway during his rookie campaign. It features the Black/Charcoal upper like the OG, but with a Royal Blue interior and Jordan branding and Penny’s ’1′ logo stitched onto the heel. These are certainly one of the rarest and most interesting PEs to ever hit the planet, and the fact that they’re game-worn and signed by Penny himself just make ‘em that much greater, and although these do resemble the upcoming ‘Photo Blue’ Retro, it’s a stretch to say that Penny Hardaway had any connection with ‘em. Not many things can set the sneaker world ablaze like February’s release of the Nike Air Foamposite One ‘Galaxy’ did. One could argue that the mayhem that ensued on the night of February 24th is what forced Nike into a corner and compelled them to move forward with the controversial changes to the release procedures, and while it will certainly take some time for the pros and cons of those changes to be fairly assessed. Since the Galaxy Foams released, we’ve seen the speckled black and purple graphic take shape in a number of sneakers in custom form, with the Nike Zoom Rookie LWP being one of the first to make that attempt. Here we have a first look at the Nike Zoom Rookie LWP ‘Galaxy’ in its official form, and you can bet your own Galaxys that these are legit because they’ve been spotted on none other than the Foam don Penny Hardaway. While the Foamposite One utilized a darker ‘deep space’ backdrop, these Zoom Rookies are considerably pinker at the toe and the heel. Glow-in-the-dark treatment can be spotted on the outsole, but not on the moon/bowling-ball pods like they were on the Air Flight One ‘Galaxy’. Penny Hardaway’s impression in today’s sneaker game is about to get a bit deeper with this Holiday’s debut of the Nike Air Penny V – his fifth signature shoe and first post-career signature basketball model. Borrowing key details from past models and combining them with both new-age and revised comfort technology, the Nike Air Penny V captures that on-court performance vibe while equally sharing a street-sensible style. Simply put, these will go hard on the court, and harder with a pair of jeans. Here we have a first look at an upcoming New Green/Safety Orange-White colorway that is set to hit stores this December; it’s got a Miami-like vibe with the Dolphins-esque colorway (anything Miami these days seems to be an utter hit), although the direct tie-in of this colorway is yet to be revealed. Penny Hardaway is the talk of 2012 thus far, boasting three outstanding Foamposite releases, the return of the Nike Air Flight One, and the confirmation of a fifth signature shoe with Nike. Today, we have a sneak peek at some more Air Penny V colorways for Holiday 2012; following the release of the $150 Black/Game Royal-White in November, a New Green/Safety Orange-White colorway will follow in the same month, with a energetic Dark Grey/Black-Rave Pink-Court Purple hitting stores in December at $160 – $10 higher than the previous two. The Nike Air Flight One returned to the spotlight in Orlando during the NBA All-Star aka ‘Galaxy’ weekend, and while the original colorway named after its hometown exposed the younger generation to a nearly forgotten cult favorite, it’d take a serious sneakerhead to call out all the other OGs for this model. One of those was a mostly-white royal-accented editon that came towards the end of this model’s first run in 1995, a colorway we see reworked with a splashier approach above. And while we can’t expect to see these hit retail with Penny Hardaway‘s signature as on the toe of this pair you’ll see after the jump, they do indeed seem poised to introduce a new blocking pattern for this model. But given the recent popularity of classics with that same antique varsity simplicity of late, would you have rather seen this pair or its black or red brethren released in the original form? It’s rather interesting to know that Nike’s most popular signature athlete of the 1990′s had just four signature shoes (and one unofficial sig – the Air Foamposite One). It’s true that the Air Penny volumes are rather short-lived, but it’s safe to say that the brief account is one of the most celebrated of all-time. With the massive success of the Foamposite as well as the first two Air Penny models, it can leave us wondering the potential of a longer legacy of Air Pennys. In what some might perceive as an unprecedented move, Nike Basketball is poised to introduced the fifth Air Penny signature – the Nike Air Penny V; this first clear look at the recently trending topic reveals quite a number of familiar design cues from the Penny line and post-Penny productions, like the rounded outsole and ridged midsole.
It’s almost as if the design co. picked up right where they left off, which is probably why the Air Penny V looks so darn familiar. What many may not realize is that there was in fact a fifth Air Penny shoe that, at the outset, was intended to continue the Air Penny line, but it never bore the name – that shoe is none other than the Nike Air 3 LE, which is commonly known as one of Kevin Garnett’s signature shoes. MTV isn’t particularly known to cover sneakers or the fast-growing culture, but when an MTV correspondent ran into Penny Hardaway at a recent event, he felt compelled to ask the Foamposite originator a few questions regarding the massive craze behind the sneaker and about Penny’s personal favorite colorway. During this short interview, Penny Hardaway states that his favorite is the all-white Foamposite (also a PE he rocked back in the day), alluding to the PE he wore in mid-October, and then noted that the shoe would in fact be arriving, bringing us full circle to his original statement made regarding an all-white Foamposite during a recent radio interview. It seems that Penny himself is a bit taken back by the Foam-nomenon, as he humbly admits that he “never could have thought, in a million years” that Foams would reach the level of popularity we see today. This week was dominated by news of the Air Foamposite One ‘Galaxy’, and just a few hours ago we showed you another neck-breaking set of Foams in the form of Penny Hardaway’s Air Foamposite One ‘Shooting Stars’ All-Star PE. Nothing reeks of that ‘cool factor’ when you see pair of classics worn by the player they were intended for, so seeing Penny Hardaway play in the 2012 Celebrity All-Star Game as part of the All-Star Weekend was truly a sight for the eyes. For the first half of the game, Penny rocked the Galaxy Foams, then switched over to his starry PEs for the second half.
