20 Years Of Nike Basketball Design: Air Max Penny (1995)

Today’s chapter in the Nike Basketball history book¬†is a discussion of one of many models that makes 1995-96 arguably the best season on record, but this story has its nexus somewhere between the 1992 Air Raid and Air Max2 CB ’94 posts that preceded it. Draft Day ’93 introduced the entire world to Anfernee ‘Penny’ Hardaway, a brilliant oversized point guard from the then-relatively unheralded University of Memphis. It was on June 30th of that year that the Orlando Magic traded the rights to #1 pick Chris Webber of Michigan Fab Five (and Air Flight Huarache) fame, cementing Penny’s return from a gunshot that just two years earlier had jeopardized his entire career.

Webber went on to win that season’s Rookie of the Year award, but in Hardaway, Orlando had a once-a-generation talent who would become the face of the franchise and arguably the most successful Nike signature athlete of the mid-to-late ’90s not named ‘Michael Jordan’. After a couple of playoff appearances including the 1995 NBA Finals run and a rocking bunch of notable styles like the Air Flight One, Air Go LWP and Air Up, Eric Avar laced Penny with a groundbreaking design that foreshadowed changes to come in the Beaverton B-Ball division.

The Nike Air Max Penny (1) debuted around the start of the ’95-96 season with a style that defied the Flight and Force conventions, foreshadowed Foamposite with its prominent, wavy midsole and helped to launch the Uptempo line for a new generation of explosive perimeter players. The Air Max Penny also furthered Hardaway’s connection to the then ‘Tensile Air’ that first appeared on the AF One, paving the way for the explosion of Zoom Air that’s still one of the Swoosh’s premier cushioning platforms. Introducing the Chris Rock-voiced Lil Penny marionette along with the unveiling of Penny’s ’1c’ logo pushed this design over the top, and made for another memorable classic that has us excited to see what will be the next chapter on Monday?

Take one good look at the Nike Basketball Elite Series and you’ll get a firm idea on what Nike Basketball’s direction will be for the LeBron, Kobe, and Hyperdunk over the course of the coming years. But for designing the Air Penny V, a sneaker with a spirit from over a decade ago, Nike chose to go back in time and follow up from the Air Max Penny IV and continue the Penny series as if it had never missed a beat. That’s over a decade of design evolution that is being overlooked, so while it looks like the sneaker could’ve been designed in the 90′s it’s got contemporary Nike build – it’s like the best of both worlds. Check out the ‘on-feet’ shots of both the Black/Royal ‘Orlando’ colorway and the spicier ‘Miami Dolphins’ joints and stay tuned to Sneaker News for more updates on the Air Penny V.¬†Photos: kumastock

After the introduction of the Nike Zoom Rookie LWP last year, the Air Penny legacy writes a new story for 2012 in the form of the Air Flight One re-release and the Air Penny V – Penny Hardaway’s fifth official signature sneaker. However, the Zoom Rookie continues to be a recurring figment this year, with several new releases, the ‘Galaxy’ customs, and most recently, the actual Galaxy version that Penny casually wore around. A new detailed look at the tonal Royal Blue ‘Memphis Blues’ PE is upon us today, and while a release isn’t confirmed, the fact that these are popping up yet again could hint at one as these were previously known to be a 1-of-1. Would you be open to a release of the Memphis Blues or even the tonal-red Memphis Express? Check out the detailed images below and let us know what you think. Photos: marqueesole

Same story, different shoes? On Monday, Sneaker News showed you the upcoming October 2012 release of the Nike Air Flight One in Black/White and the interesting back-story and gave the an unintended infamy in the history of Michael Jordan. Before Michael borrowed Penny’s shoes, it appears that Penny dipped in MJ’s stash as we get a rare look at this Air Jordan IX Player Exclusive made for the Penny Hardaway during his rookie campaign. It features the Black/Charcoal upper like the OG, but with a Royal Blue interior and Jordan branding and Penny’s ’1′ logo stitched onto the heel. These are certainly one of the rarest and most interesting PEs to ever hit the planet, and the fact that they’re game-worn and signed by Penny himself just make ‘em that much greater, and although these do resemble the upcoming ‘Photo Blue’ Retro, it’s a stretch to say that Penny Hardaway had any connection with ‘em. These are up for sale now at IMAGE NY, a sneaker consignment shop located in Queens, NY that opened one year ago, so check out these detailed shots and let us know what you think.

Nike Zoom Rookie LWP ‘Galaxy’

Not many things can set the sneaker world ablaze like February’s release of the Nike Air Foamposite One ‘Galaxy’ did. One could argue that the mayhem that ensued on the night of February 24th is what forced Nike into a corner and compelled them to move forward with the controversial changes to the release procedures, and while it will certainly take some time for the pros and cons of those changes to be fairly assessed. Since the Galaxy Foams released, we’ve seen the speckled black and purple graphic take shape in a number of sneakers in custom form, with the Nike Zoom Rookie LWP being one of the first to make that attempt. Here we have a first look at the Nike Zoom Rookie LWP ‘Galaxy’ in its official form, and you can bet your own Galaxys that these are legit because they’ve been spotted on none other than the Foam don Penny Hardaway. While the Foamposite One utilized a darker ‘deep space’ backdrop, these Zoom Rookies are considerably pinker at the toe and the heel. Glow-in-the-dark treatment can be spotted on the outsole, but not on the moon/bowling-ball pods like they were on the Air Flight One ‘Galaxy’. More shots below, so take a look and we’ll keep you updated if anything develops. Photos:

Penny Hardaway’s impression in today’s sneaker game is about to get a bit deeper with this Holiday’s debut of the Nike Air Penny V – his fifth signature shoe and first post-career signature basketball model. Borrowing key details from past models and combining them with both new-age and revised comfort technology, the Nike Air Penny V captures that on-court performance vibe while equally sharing a street-sensible style. Simply put, these will go hard on the court, and harder with a pair of jeans. Here we have a first look at an upcoming New Green/Safety Orange-White colorway that is set to hit stores this December; it’s got a Miami-like vibe with the Dolphins-esque colorway (anything Miami these days seems to be an utter hit), although the direct tie-in of this colorway is yet to be revealed. Now that we’ve got another good look at the Air Penny V, what are your thoughts? Photo: JordanPP30 on NT
