Is it even possible that another pair of Nike Zoom Rookie LWPs could have stolen the show on a day when a sick Orlando ‘home’-styled colorway dropped among five all-new takes on Nike Sportswear’s Penny Hardaway greatest hits? That depends what you think of the brief glimpse of an all-blue Zoom Rookie worn by Anfernee himself during the release event of his special five-pack at Nike Las Vegas. This event featured our first look at all the new Air Foamposite Ones and Pros we showed you earlier today, and it looks like even more’s on the way for 2012 with a ‘Think Pink’ Foam One peeking through a case that’s been stuffed with about two grand of NSW’s foamy favorites. The legend of Penny Hardaway has never been more celebrated than it has this year. With countless Foamposite One/Pro releases already occurring throughout the year, Nike Sportswear will finally introduce to the public the Nike Zoom Rookie – the second Penny-centric hybrid model combining his Rookie Year kicks. One part Air Flight One, another part Air Go LWP, and a healthy dash of Foamposite will result in this finely tuned hybrid design, but before the customary Blue colorway hits, the Glow In The Dark colorway will be first to roll out the Zoom Rookie carpet. You can be among the first to grab these limited releases tomorrow at select Nike Sportswear retailers like 21 Mercer, Extra Butter, WEST NYC, and Moe’s among others, with a few more spots set to release the GITD Rookie this weekend. Over the weekend, Penny Hardaway was spotted at his alma mater where the Memphis Madness event kicked off big-time college basketball in southwest Tennessee. Penny was on hand to judge the Tigers’ slam dunk contest, but it’s likely that more jaws dropped around the world when Hardaway tweeted an image of the footwear he wore to the FedEx Forum. This all-white Nike Air Foamposite One PE was created specially for Penny along with the Air Force 1 Low PE and white/grey Zoom Rookie LWP we showed you a while back, but we can’t help the feeling that these could outsell both of those combined were they ever released to retail. With “midnight madness” in the air across the college basketball land, we’ve recently seen a few coinciding sneakers to help properly show some 2011-2012 school spirit on foot leading up to last night’s festivities. The ‘Oregon Pit Crew’ version of the Air Jordan III and the LeBron 9 ‘University Pack’ have made some big noise in the sneaker world lately, but no one ever saw these coming. At last night’s “Memphis Madness” event at the FedEx Forum, Penny Hardaway was in attendance to show some support to his former college squad and participate as a guest judge in the Tigers’ slam dunk contest. The real story though, was on Penny’s feet – a pair of white on white Air Foamposite Ones that were shown off on his Twitter page referred to as Memphis Madness exclusives. No word yet on a possible releases for these, so for now we’ll assume that they’re for Penny (and perhaps a select few others) only, but you know we’ll keep you posted if there are any further developments.

The Binary Blue edition of the upcoming Nike Zoom Rookie LWP has garnered most of the attention for that model over the past month, but let’s not forget that there are not one but two white and black colorways on deck as well. This yin-yang of a Zoom Rookie doesn’t glow in the dark like the Luminous Pearl edition to which it’s relatively similar, though you can go ahead and place any sum of money on a bet that they’ll stand out in a crowd all the same. This is Nike Sportswear hybridized modular design at its finest, and they show all kinds of promise for future mashups based on Nike Basketball standouts from the 1990s. The Nike Air Foamposite One is commonly referred to as a Penny Hardaway signature shoe despite it not being an official member of the Nike Air Penny line. We all remember Mike Bibby wear them at Arizona, and it was Penny himself who spotted the Foams during a meeting with Nike reps, instantly falling in love with the shoe and immortalizing it in the sneaker sub-culture archives. As part of Sole Collector’s collaboration with Nike Sportswear, Nike will release this limited edition colorway of the Nike Air Foamposite One in a quintessential yet never-been-done Orlando colorway of the shoe; it’s got a solid black upper with the keynote translucent outsole, a bold varsity royal lace-placket and laces, and a dirty copper 1-Cent badge on the tongue. The shoes will be part of the SC x NSW x Penny Hardaway Signature Pack that will release at a special Nike Zoom Rookie LWP release event at Nike Las Vegas this Saturday. If you grew up watching the NBA in the 90′s, the likelihood that you were a fan of Anfernee ‘Penny’ Hardaway is fairly high. Penny was undoubtedly Nike’s most valuable marketing chip behind Michael Jordan, and playing for the exciting Orlando Magic and experiencing quick success (it took Penny just two seasons to reach the NBA Finals) only helped his cause. Then came Lil’ Penny, an ‘alter ago’ of sorts, the TV ads with the impeccable Tyra Banks, and a line of signature shoes that are considered to be one of the most popular of all-time. Truth is, Penny’s NBA career was enhanced by his charisma, because truthfully speaking, his ‘legacy’ only stretches three, maybe four seasons. Regardless of that fact, Penny Hardaway is a 90′s basketball icon, and one of LeBron James’ personal sports ‘heroes’. Thusly, Penny Hardaway’s Nike sigs were infused with the Air Max LeBron VII as part of the unreleased ‘Heroes Pack‘, where the LeBron VII and the Air Penny came together in a sweet marriage of iconic sneaker detailing. Penny Hardaway’s signature line of sneakers is one of the few in Nike history that has experienced longevity in the game. Despite having just five total installments (and the final two being rather forgettable), the Air Penny line has maintained popularity over the years thanks to a staying-power of the Air Foamposite One and even the Air Max Penny 1. It was given new life in 2009 with the introduction of the Air 1/2 Cent, which was a hybrid shoe of all the Air Penny signatures, and in 2011, we have yet another Air Penny hybrid that may not be instantly recognizable. The Zoom Rookie is an amalgam of the Air Foamposite One, Air Flight One, and Air Go LWP – the latter two being non-signature Nike Basketball shoes. Only true Penny Hardaway fans may be able to place those two accurately in Nike Penny history, but for the young guns who’ve never even seen Penny play the game, the Zoom Rookie is a nice ‘history lesson’ of sorts, schooling them on the most successful sig line of the 90′s from the guy not named Michael Jordan.
