It only happens a few times each year, so you know when Sneaker News turns our attention to cutting edge tennis shoes, we’re getting close to a Grand Slam event. The Australian Open is the first of the four major tournaments each year, and Nike’s sending two of the top three men, two of the top five ladies and two up and comers in fresh new gear. Arguable GOAT and four-time Aussie winner Roger Federer gets a Swiss-style kit along with neon accents on his Nike Zoom Vapor Tour 9, while arch nemesis Rafael Nadal opts for green on his shirt but more of a focus on bright blue with the latest Air Max Courtballistec 4.3. Young Croation Bernard Tomic proved with his upset of the 22 seed in Round 1 that he’s deserving of recognition if not yet a signature sneaker, as is the case for ladies 5-seed Na Li. Nike keeps the WMNS side on equal footing thanks to a new Air Max Mirabella 3 for Serena Williams along with Maria Sharapova’s Lunar Speed 3 lowtops. Will Rafael Nadal become a three-time Wimbledon champion this year? We’ll find out in a few weeks, but thanks to Nike Tennis‘ London Collection 2011, we already have a good idea of what Rafa will be wearing in defense of his grass court grand slam championship. Nadal will be seen in an uncharacteristically conservative kit this time around, a traditional white base with simple blue accents that’s in step with both the All England Club’s heritage and current fashion leanings. Nadal’s polo, shorts and headband all match a new Nike Air Max Courtballistec 3.3. Click through to see images of Rafa’s clothing and kicks and let us know how they compare to rival Roger Federer’s.

Grass or clay, it doesn’t matter. Nadal is THAT dude. Currently ranked number one in the world, Nadal is looking to further engrave himself into tennis history this season while wearing the Nike Air Max Courtballistec 3.3 in a stunning White/Gridiron-Green Apple-True Yellow colorway. The Courtballistec 3.3 features a Drag On upper for supreme stability, LunarLon cushioning for a springy yet shock-absorbing support, an off-center lacing system for a lock-down fit, and just a sweet design that would make Jon McEnroe and the Air Trainer 1 a proud papa. Will we see a tennis-ball like colorway, similar to the Air Max Courtballistec 2.2 from last year? These have begun to hit retailers like CitySole so take a look below (these look sweet for casual wear) and pick up a pair now on eBay.
