Kudos to Vans for not just blindly copying the Harlem Shake meme, but Off the Wall did indeed collect a bunch of people dancing around in crazy costumes for this latest promo video. The Vans 2013 Brand Anthem Parade sees everything from skaters shredding a pool float to dudes dressed up as classic Vans sneakers, not to mention a variety of legendary riders dropping in to make a drizzle-filled day into an ode to action sports. Vimeo bills itself as a “world of awesome”, a tag that seems fitting for the most beautiful and unique video streaming site on the web. That kind of gnarly language might not even have ever existed, much less matriculate to the mainstream, without the foundation laid forty-six years ago when the Van Doren brothers kickstarted their namesake sneaker brand. Director Eliot Rausch follows Steve Van Doren into the skeleton of the company’s first manufacturing space, where Steve and his late brother James put in the groundwork from which guys like Steve Caballero, Tony Alva and Ray Barbee ollied so high. This latest drop of Vans Pro Classics isn’t labeled as a ‘Legends Pack’, but when you take into account the legacy of the guy who colored them, they absolutely could have been. The Ray Barbee x Vans Old Skool ’92 and Epoch ’95 come from one of the founding members of Lance Mountain’s The Firm, though he’s arguably just as popular these days for musical stylings on the guitar and several other instruments. And just like the Fender Stratocaster he’s often seen playing, these simple one-colored suede designs have a timeless quality whose performance demands they stay around for generations to come.
