REEBOK INSTA PUMP FURY The Reebok Insta Pump Fury is a runner in Reebok’s innovative Pump line originally released in 1993. The sneaker utilizes a segmented design and opts out of laces, instead relying on the lockdown cushioning of the Insta Pump CO2 charger. The Reebok Insta Pump Fury has been re-released countless times since its 1993 debut via both in-house and collaborative designs.

Just how much do the OCD habits of otakus and sneakerheads overlap? If you’re looking for parallels between the subcultures you don’t have to go t0o far, with anime lovers turning their noses up at English dubs the same way sneaker folks have a hard time swallowing retro recreations that stray too far from the OG versions. Anyway, while you continue to ponder that take a look at this intersection of the two cultures curated by Reebok, a version of the Insta Pump Fury tied in with the one year Ghost in the Shell series Stand Alone Complex. You’ll notice the sneakers themselves get their cool blue combo from the little Tachikoma bots that run around at the end of each episode, either that or you’ll shrug it off if you’re not familiar with the intricacies of anime and just pick them up for their overall sleek look. Click through to check out the Ghost in the Shell x Reebok Insta Pump Fury “Stand Alone Complex” which just arrived at Japanese retailer mita sneakers.

Last month, it looked like Asics had raced to the front of the sneaker collaboration pack thanks to several upcoming projects including Bait’s ‘Five Rings’ capsule. In June, ‘Reebok Back’ in a big way, and their distinctive 1994 running flagship (and its HLS offspring) is the most prominent of bunch, having just showed up in ‘Spider-Man’, ‘Wolverine’ and Verbal/Ambush collabo colorways. And here’s another animated fantasy world come to life on the Reebok Insta Pump Fury, this Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex edition celebrating the early ’00s anime and its Tachikoma walker (seeing the shoe next to its toy muse reminds you of Jun Watanabe’s second ‘Mr. Bottle Head’ Insta Pumps, no?). A boldly colored Insta Pump Fury with just a hint of radioactivity implied — are we looking at the latest addition to the Marvel Comics x Reebok collection? These aren’t a superhero-inspired design, but the Whiz Limited x Reebok Insta Pump Fury curated by Insta Pump regulars mita sneakers is every bit as eye-catching with this uniquely applied colorway. At its core, the grey, navy and red combo is the kind of thing we’ve seen from New Balance a hundred times, but this pair’s unique blocking and the careful selection of those aforementioned bright yellow hits gives this pair a feel all its own. Check them out in greater detail below and be ready when these arrive at AP retailers for fall 2012. via Kumastock

Reebok and Marvel Comics have been collaborating on Spider-Man sneakers for a while now, but this upcoming collection is a reminder that in the ten years since Sam Raimi’s first Peter Parker film started the CGI superhero revolution, it was a team-up in The Avengers that made the biggest splash. The Marvel x Reebok partnership grows stronger thanks to a variety of characters on a mix of familiar and updated silhouettes whose total of ten different drops offers an RBK-penned answer to the highly successful Star Wars x adidas Originals collab. Mark Webb’s Peter Parker reboot will open on Will Smith weekend, just over a decade after Sam Raimi’s blockbuster Spider-Man kicked off the modern CGI superhero frenzy. During roughly that same period, sneaker collaborations have become so popular that a design like this that may have at one point seemed inconcievable, is now another ‘amazing’, if expected product. The Spiderman x Reebok Insta Pump Fury brings to mind images of 2011′s Purple Rain and TRON:Legacy designs while its relatively conservative high contrast design makes for more of a ‘PG-13′ feel than the cartoon-covered kids collabos we’ve seen. Let us know how these compare to the earlier Spiderman Reeboks and check out more images of these on the other side. Photos: mita sneakers

Sneaker collaborations are so common these days, many designers are looking for an extra edge to have their products stand out against a market that puts them out ‘x’ the hundreds. Some rely on teasing and limited availability, others resurrect forgotten classics and then you have a visionary like Jun Watanabe who’s pushing the envelope from all corners. Watanabe’s latest Reebok Insta Pump Fury was already audacious in its preview images thanks to a black-on-white dalmatian print accented by pink-to-purple gradients, but applying this motif to Tamiya’s popular Hornet RC car makes for one of the more interesting tie-ins in recent memory. You’ll have your choice of whether or not to buy the Hornet (as well as with or without accessories) which means not every pair is guaranteed a complete package, but it also ensures that fans of Watanabe’s new Insta Pump Fury won’t be priced out by an ‘extra’ that can cost more than the shoe itself.
