If you’ve been following Ronnie Fieg’s output over the past couple of years you’re no doubt acclimated to the one and done nature of his sneaker collaborations. Breaking that spell is his latest the Ronnie Fieg x New Balance 999 ‘Steel Blue’, a sneaker named for its homage to the immortal New Balance 1300 colorway of the same name. For starters there was a ‘Kithstrike’ release before the official date, with pairs randomly popping up at the KITH webshop and selling out in a matter of minutes. Then there was the release last weekend that had folks lining up at KITH locations and camping out online. And now to finish things off and spread the sneakers out to the world at large is this weekend’s global drop, with pairs popping up at a handful of select NB spots as of Saturday, June 30th. While many of Ronnie Fieg’s sneaker collaborations have been simple colorways on proven sneaker models, he merely uses that as a platform to display his distinct selection process of materials. His unique taste in materials, as seen in the premium nubuck, pigskin suede, and smooth leather for this “Steel Blue” triple-9, is what truly is the takeaway highlight of his personal design process, and with this Friday’s looming release of his New Balance 999, Ronnie Fieg and Kith will hit a lucky group of customers with the special edition box set, featuring the shoes and the Kith x New Balance apparel, which includes hoodies, crewnecks, sweat shorts, and sweatpants. Each hand-made piece (in NYC nonetheless) features Kith x NB branding, leather tagging, and drawstring tightening (on the pants items). 100 handmade wooden boxes will also be released, containing the shoes, the hoodie, and the sweat shorts (50 units per Kith retail spot in Manhattan and Brooklyn). A detailed gallery is just ahead so keep this Friday, June 22nd marked on your calender as the Ronnie Fieg x New Balance 999 ‘Steel Blue’ will become available both online and in-store at KITH.

Though its name and general style was borrowed from an all time classic, Ronnie Fieg‘s New Balance 999 ‘Steel Blue’ isn’t an exact copy of the legendary 1300 by that same moniker. In fact, it took six different revisions before RF’s latest NB collaboration was ready for retailers, everything from material selection and distribution to which parts of the branding will make the most impact. Given that we rarely see samples with more than one (set of) serious revision(s) for any particular sneaker design, it’s especially interesting to see the stages this one went through in order to get ready for its Friday, June 15th release date. Following up on that initial preview we’ve got a much clearer view of this take down of the famed New Balance 1300 of the same name, a sneaker Fieg has pegged as one of his most beloved models in that cannon of impeccably clean retro runners. Right after the release weekend of Ronnie Fieg’s latest collaboration with one celebrated running imprint and we get our first substantial look at his next. Previewed here is the New Balance 999 that Fieg has been cooking up, apparently a take-off on the beloved ‘Steel Blue’ colorway of the New Balance 1300 that his Kith space recently re-launched in 2012. The sneaker does play with the traditional Steel Blue makeup a little bit, switching out the mesh sectioning towards the toe box and ankle areas in favor of a perforated suede treatment.
