The last time Tokyo sneaker boutique Kicks Lab collaborated on Thrasher’s Half Cab copycat they brought along local legends mita sneakers. This time the third participant is an equally notable name in the Asian sneakerhead community, but instead of a store, SBTG’s work has a distinctly after-market appeal. This new duo of SBTG x Kicks Lab x Thrasher Buchanan Dogs sees the Royale Fam leader apply his uniquely aggressive touch in the form of personalized tongue tags, bold heel embroidery and a newly implemented lace shroud. Click through to see the crossbones along with how suede and herringbone wool sections come together in this understated black and olive pairing and let us know where they rank against SBTG’s best custom jobs.

Oh Mark Ong where have you been? The sneaker customizer a decade deep in the game has been a little quiet in recent years as far as actually working with sneakers, his latest full on collection being that for the imagined Deer Valley Titans squad. This time around the man also known as SBTG is back to work on a one of one for Nike brass Joaquin Hidalgo (check the back tabs), applying his masterful hand to a leather pair of the Nike Cortez. Stay with us after the jump to get a better look at the flame-tipped result of the so called “South Sin” customs and stay with Sneaker News for more word on what SBTG is up to these days.

The custom works of Mark Ong (SBTG) are particularly notable for its strong connections to Ong’s home country of Vietnam. Dating back to his earliest works with custom sneakers, Ong has implemented militarism in his designs, like the tiger camo and color profile seen in this latest work, but look closer and you’ll see a unique graphic on the upper. Look familiar? A co-inspiration of this design falls on the shoulders of Joy Division, an English rock band, and its debut album Unknown Pleasures; the graphic is taken from the album artwork of that classic album, giving these customs an added level of Mark Ong’s personality. Check out the extra images below and let us know what you think of this latest custom work.

Last we heard from Singapore sneaker customizer extraordinaire Mark Ong, he was working on a run of Air Jordan IIIs with a unique tonal blue tiger camo on the upper. Those were designed as part of the SBTG x Titan ‘Deer Valley Titans’ capsule, but this latest look might be more closely related to the season than a store. These new SBTG x Air Jordan III ’Spitfire’ has an earthy look just in time for the fall season, their mix of olive green, black and blaze orange exactly what you’d expect from the most devoted shoe hunters. Click through so you can see more of SBTG’s latest creations and stick with Sneaker News for updates on this ‘in progress’ Air Jordan 3 custom.

That it’s even debatable that the five Air Jordan III Retro releases in 2011 (six if you count the rainbow GS joints) make it the year’s top Air Jordan Legacy silhouette is a testament to the overwhelming mass of top tier releases this year, so with such an unprecedented landscape for sneakerheads to navigate, it seems apt that a surprise contender has emerged to take its own shot at the model’s ’11 best. SBTG has the custom kicks game down to a science and his Air Jordan 3 customs might make you care as much about the fictitious Deer Valley Titans as the Chicago Bulls. Everything from the level of detail to the high contrast colorway is next-level stuff with this one, a substantial release that even if taking a backseat to the Cement OGs, would have to garner serious consideration for the custom crown. US sneakerheads can expect to pay a premium for the few pairs that make it beyond collectors at the August 5th release event, so click through to get a glimpse and let us know if you’ll take the effort to procure a pair.

Sneaker News has profiled more custom kicks in the first half of 2011 than our entire history before that combined, and while there’s no doubting the talent of today’s emerging artists, it’s equally obvious that they owe quite a bit to pioneers like the guy (whose work is) pictured above. Mark Ong aka SBTG has been putting custom paint on Nike Sportswear classics and Air Jordan Legacy models for years now, his latest work commissioned to commemorate the one year anniversary of Philippine sneaker boutique Titan. The SBTG x UNSCHLD x Titan team-up extends the ‘Varsity Bones’ theme that we saw two years ago imagine what it could have been like had Kobe Bryant followed through on his plan to attend Duke University — this new collaboration extends the series into another imaginary underdog squad, the Deer Valley Titans. The collection includes an Air Jordan III, a Nike Blazer Mid and a Dunk High, each in the “school’s” red, black, blue and teal palette, and they’ll be available at Titan this Friday, August 5th starting at 6 pm local time. Click through to see SBTG’s latest customs and stick with Sneaker News for updates on the next DVT collection that we expect to release in October.

“Use everything around you to create, to translate whatever’s in your head.”
Vita Brevis Films traveled to Singapore to catch famed sneaker customizer SBTG and his RoyaleFam in the act of following thru on the above quoted recipe for success. Those words are from SBTG himself, aka Mark Ong, and his latest collaboration is with FICE, dubbed ’138′. As of right now, the project is shrouded in secrecy but based on the trailer video of the upcoming short doc and SBTG’s own history, we’d place our bets on the Nike Dunk. Click through to see the trailer in its entirety, let us know what you think and stick with Sneaker News for more on the shoes and the SBTG documentary.

SBTG Royalefam sits at the apex of customized sneakers for its unparalled design work, pumped out since 2003.
