Dapper Dan is every bit a legend in the world of hip-hop fashion-the Harlem resident serving as a tailor to a handful of golden era rapper luminaries and street figures. His MO was appropriating the luxury likes of Gucci, Chanel, and more to his own ends, with his shop in NYC serving up custom made pieces fashioned fabrics of those high-end providers. He hit on a few sneakers back in the day too, and by the looks of this recent Sneaker Freaker piece the New Balance 574 was one of them. The pair is known as the Supra Owen ‘Blueballs’, slapping a cool black and blue overlay onto Supra’s first running silhouette and even sliding some speckles onto the midsole. Sneaker Freaker Turns 10

sneaker freaker turns 101 570x409 Sneaker Freaker Turns 10

The seminal sneakerhead print publication turned ten this year, as Sneaker Freaker celebrated its first decade with three collaborative releases inspired by their Australian homeland (plus another friends & family exclusive with BBC overtones).  A look back to the first SNKR FRKR reveals how much has changed, and what a magical thing was brewing in 2002 when the magazine got its start, some of the foundational boutiques opened across the globe and Nike Basketball’s Sole Provider hardcover foreshadowed some significant changes thanks to various applications of their retro styles.  One could argue that modern publishing technologies and the current wave of sneakerhead culture would have resulted in the scene as we know it today even without their presence, but Sneaker Freaker adds the kind of personality, attention to detail and pure passion for kicks that makes them synonymous with this era; a trusted institution for years to come.

Sneaker Freaker x New Balance 998 “Tassie Devil”

new balance tassie devil Sneaker Freaker x New Balance 998 Tassie Devil

The genre of sneaker collaborations has expanded considerably over the last few years, but only a select few are capable of really putting a riveting plotline behind a shoe. CNCPTS in New England, Extra Butter in Long Island, NY, and the legendary Sneaker Freaker are just some of the exclusive group of creative minds who go beyond the banality of “let’s pick out some nice colors” and delve into story-telling mode – and Sneaker Freaker’s latest footwear collaboration doesn’t disappoint. They start things off by stating that there is no true ‘theme’ for this shoe, but somehow they manage to convey a message  - even without intent.

This first look at the Sneaker Freaker x New Balance 998 ‘Tassie Devil’ proves that notion once again, as the colorway is a half-tribute to Solebox’ amazing New Balance ’1500′ Devil collab, but at the heart is inspired driven by a cause close to the hearts of Australian natives; the Tasmanian Devil is synonymous to the region Down Under, but en epidemic has afflicted the native marsupials to the point of near extinction. A healthy chunk of the profits from the Sneaker Freaker ‘Tassie Devil’ will go toward a charity to support – and save – these wild animals. A detailed gallery is just ahead, so take a look and we’ll keep you updated on release information.

Pony 40 Year Retrospective Book by Sneaker Freaker

pony 40 year retrospective book by sneaker freaker Pony 40 Year Retrospective Book by Sneaker Freaker

Few in our niche can rival the journalistic reputation owned by Australian periodical Sneaker Freaker.  During their ten years of service to the sneakerhead set, SF has leveraged that credibility for a number of superlative collaborative projects (most recently, the ‘Bushwhacker’ Saucony Grid 9000).  In this case, it would seem that the brand being celebrated has even more to gain from the exposure, as recent collabo releases indicate that Pony is making a serious effort to recapture its former glory in the brand’s 40th anniversary year.  The SNKRFRKR-published Pony 40 Year Retrospective reminds us that this brand supported athletes ranging from Bob McAdoo to Reggie Jackson and Spud Webb, but you’ll probably never see one on Amazon (or eBay for that matter, given the tight F&F distribution on this run).  Click through for a glimpse into the latest SF-authored banger and stick with Sneaker News for updates on Pony’s 40th birthday.  via FNG

Sneaker Freaker x Supra Skytop III “Goldenballs”

supra goldenballs Sneaker Freaker x Supra Skytop III Goldenballs

Fresh off the heels of the release of ‘Bushwackers’, Sneaker Freaker continues its 10th Anniversary celebration with yet another sneaker collaboration, although these might not be the worldwide pleaser as the Grid 9000s were. Why is that, must you ask? This Supra Skytop III dubbed the (‘Goldenballs) falls into the dreaded ‘Friends & Family’ category as just twenty-four pairs will be handed out during the Sneaker Freaker party in Berlin, although Sneaker Freaker will give away one pair to a lucky a fellow Freaker later on. Speaking on the composition of the Sneaker Freaker x Skytop III: it’s a soft yellow suede upper matched with a black heel with a speckled grey/black midsole and white outsole, while the sole pink eyelet provides enough contrast to compel a double-take. It’s no mystery that the folks at Sneaker Freaker are gods when it comes to color-blocking, but it’s sad that these may never end up in your hands! A detailed gallery awaits you below so check ‘em out and let us know what you think.
