Nike basketball was in a strange place in the mid-2000s. Today the brand dominates the hoops scene thanks to inking contracts with a trio of the most marketable players on the planet in LeBron, Kobe, and Kevin Durant, but there was a time in the not-so-distant past when Vince Carter resided on the top of the Nike mountain. That could’ve been due to a number of variables – his high flying marketability after the 2000 Dunk Contest and a post-Jordan basketball landscape that was desperately looking for its next star to emerge. The list of potential signature stars was seemingly endless, but one thing was for certain – the sneaker was going to include Nike Shox technology.

The unique, almost alien tech advancement has been missing in action for the most part in regards to courtside models today, but for almost a decade Nike championed the feature until blowing it off for a preferred Air Max or Zoom base. Be sure to stick with us after the click to get the latest NINE@NINE rundown of 9 Nike Shox basketball models that helped expand the reach of the famed Swoosh technology and be sure to check out the latest addition to the Shox family, the Shox TLX Mid SP.

The poor Spurs. We’re not too sure that they mind having their championship celebration immediately overshadowed by talk of where LeBron will end up by next season’s start, but for the past 2 decades, San Antonio has handled business as usual regardless of whether they win a championship or not. Kawhi Leonard’s Air Jordan XX8 SE PEs had a similar thought process throughout the NBA Finals, but previous Finals PEs took a different approach (just as long as they were produced by the Swoosh, that is). Today’s NINE@NINE takes a look back at the past decade of NBA Finals MVPs to get a close look at what exactly they were wearing, and the silhouettes featured are as diverse as the past champions themselves. From Dwyane Wade hoisting his first championship trophy in a Converse shoe, to a Paul Pierce signature sneaker that never even saw a retail release, the list serves as a reminder of the transformation of the Finals as a time for brands to showcase their design skills through special edition colorways. Stick with us to check out what the last nine NBA Finals MVPs wore en route to the Bill Russell trophy in our latest Sneaker News NINE@NINE feature, and let us know which pair is your favorite in the comments.

sn 9at9 jordan remastered 1 Sneaker News NINE@NINE: Air Jordans We Hope to See Remastered

Last week, news broke that Jordan Brand would be “remastering” the retro line beginning in Spring 2015. This process focuses on reorienting the brand’s retro offerings towards a higher standard of quality, which will be achieved through production processes that place greater emphasis on uniformity and adherence to the original molds, materials, and shapes that Michael played in. It’s a move that the community of Air Jordan fanatics has been waiting on for years, and one that’s been celebrated early on (Save for the word regarding the 10%-15% price increase). The news regarding the remastering even came with some promised models for 2014: Air Jordan 4s, Air Jordan 7s, and Air Jordan 10s.

Sneaker News NINE@NINE: Hip-Hop Sneakers

In 2014, rappers are given sneakers with increasing frequency. And we don’t mean “given” in the sense of blessed with promotional pairs ahead of the release date, but rather they’ve had more and more opportunities to channel their personae into limited footwear collections thanks to the support of sneaker companies. This process didn’t happen overnight though, it took a couple of decades of endorsements before the floodgates really opened as far as special SMUs went. You of course have to give credit to Run DMC back in the ’80s for championing their adidas, and to a lesser extent LL Cool J for linking up with Troop (Although fellow Queens rapper MC Shan didn’t approve).

We’re in a new age of Nike/NFL tie-ins now that the sportswear giant has the outfitting rights for the league. The five year contract started back in April of 2012 and immediately had an effect on Nike’s sneaker output. Let’s not forget though that the brand has long been committed to the idea of gridiron sneakers. In fact, University of Oregon quarterback Dan Fouts was one of the first athletes Knight and co. got to wear their sneakers outside of their circle of track stars. Back then, pairs like the Nike Astro Grabber with its waffle kit on bottom and the Nike Turfster with its more straightforward cleat design proved as early as 1972 that Nike meant business in the football footwear realm.

The stateside profile of Asics’ various retro silhouettes has been on a steady rise for a number of years now. While their classic Gel cushioned runners definitely built the foundation for this, it’s no secret that the various collab partners who have chipped in with their special edition designs helped build up the brand’s lifestyle efforts. Quite a few of those pairs remain relatively obscure today though, seeing as how the era of their debut was a pretty different one for footwear enthusiasts. On top of that, the collaborators have historically skewed non-American, so the distribution of these sort of pairs was usually a bit harsh for Yankees. But it’s a new day for Asics in the US; more and more shops have them around and more and more of us are checking for them.

sn 9 at 9 mj playoffs Sneaker News NINE@NINE: Playoff Air Jordans

The 2014 NBA Playoffs have so far featured some of the most exciting post-season play that we’ve ever seen in the league. The first round was more thrilling than ever before – fans were treated to five Game 7s, eight overtime games, and tons of memorable moments throughout. The Playoffs have for a long time demanded sneaker switch ups for players, and footwear companies have responded with souped up models or special editions made to match the exciting atmosphere of the post-season. Perhaps the best example of this in modern times is Nike Basketball’s Elite Series, which rebuilds signature models for the Playoffs push with all sorts of techy, price ignoring designs. It wasn’t always that way though, just ask Michael Jordan.
