Vans Half Cab Pro “Steve Cab” – Available

vans half cab pro steve cab available Vans Half Cab Pro Steve Cab Available

In 1977, Tony Alva transformed Vans’ standard Authentic deck shoe into a true skateboarding design by adding ankle padding for comfort and protection and a heel cup for strength.  Another dozen or so years later, Off the Wall legend Steve Caballero got his first signature model, then began working in the opposite direction.  Cab decided to copy what he’d seen with other skaters and scissor off his already-cushy signature hightops, and the Vans Half Cab was born.  This new Artist Series release from Vans Pro Classics (a select collection of which Alva’s Era is one of the other two models) features a 1992 copyright and a Caballero dragon that looks like it came straight from a classic Powell deck, along with a bold crimson suede upper that’s available now from The General.

Vans Half Cab Artist Series – Steve Caballero Edition

Vans has been celebrating the 20th anniversary of Steve Caballero’s midtop signature model all year and this latest design comes full circle with the ‘artist’ responsible for the scissored-off silo itself.  The Vans Half Cab Artist Series gets dipped in burgundy suede courtesy of the legendary Mr. Cab, and the effort is made all the more special thanks to a classic Powell-esque dragon and Japanese characters on the ’20 Years’ ankle tag.  Vans has only selectively experimented with this signature design element, so this preview makes us wonder what might be in store for the Half Cab’s second score.  The Artist Series will continue to issue monthly installments after Mofo’s June and Dirty Donny’s July designs, so check out more photos below, and be sure to stick with Sneaker News for the exact release date on this August drop.  via Complex

Vimeo bills itself as a “world of awesome”, a tag that seems fitting for the most beautiful and unique video streaming site on the web.  That kind of gnarly language might not even have ever existed, much less matriculate to the mainstream, without the foundation laid forty-six years ago when the Van Doren brothers kickstarted their namesake sneaker brand.  Director Eliot Rausch follows Steve Van Doren into the skeleton of the company’s first manufacturing space, where Steve and his late brother James put in the groundwork from which guys like Steve Caballero, Tony Alva and Ray Barbee ollied so high.  Click through to see how Vans made its name by celebrating creative passion in the ‘Since 66′ short film and let us know how it compares to the best videos chronicling the sneaker scene.

Steve Caballero Tells the Story of the Half Cab

vans caballero 20th lead2 570x367 Steve Caballero Tells the Story of the Half Cab

“I don’t know when the first time I saw someone who had cut them down, but I know it was a trend.”

We’re coming up on the 20th anniversary of Steve Caballero‘s second Vans signature shoe, and in a recent conversation with Complex‘ chief sneakerhead Bengtson, the man called ‘Cab’ shared how he got inspiration from other skaters after his original pro model dropped in 1989. Skaters were chopping off the hightop Caballero to make something more suitable for the street skating that’d come into vogue around the turn of the decade, and when Steve himself decided to give it a shot, history was made. 1992 brought us the Vans Half Cab in the form we know and love it today, and Supreme will drop a super-limited special edition pack in honor of the two decade anniversary that revisits the origins of this skateboarding institution. Click through to see some classic images of Caballero shredding and stick with Sneaker News for more info on the Supreme x Vans Half Cab 20th Anniversary.

Supreme x Vans Half Cab 20th Anniversary

supreme x vans half cab 20th anniversary 1 Supreme x Vans Half Cab 20th Anniversary

The custom sneaker scene is bigger now than ever before, and while colorway and sole swaps are great, it’s rare to see the athlete for whom a shoe was both designed and named come in to do the handiwork.  But that’s exactly what skateboarding legend Steve Caballero did for this collaboration between Vans and Supreme on the occasion marking two decades since the debut of his most enduring contribution to the game.  The Supreme x Vans Half Cab 20th Anniversary special edition gets back to the model’s roots with a tiny 20-pair run starting off as the Caballero hightop that celebrated it’s 20th a few years back, and getting scissored down by Steve himself before duct tape finishes off the ankle collar.  Click through to see a video depicting one of the pairs being completed and stick with Sneaker News for updates on this jealousy-inducingly limited release.
