For better or worse, 2012 was a defining year for the sneaker world and all that it encompasses. It was a year that saw certain shoes throw the laws of supply and demand so out of whack, that brands and retailers had to completely rethink the way they sell shoes to the public just to keep the peace. If you were willing to put in some legwork or, better yet, had the right connections, it was a banner year for sneaker enthusiasts. “Must-have” releases seemed to be at an all-time high and nearly every weekend offered up some sort of temptation for consumers. 2012 saw the release of some of the most eagerly anticipated and passionately sought-after sneakers the game had ever seen and it’s safe to say that things will never be the same again.
In between those, there were plenty of other desirable targets along the way, from the special limited editions and collaborations to beloved Retro returns and promising new designs and innovations. There were even a few certified sleeper hits that organically carved out their place among the year’s best releases. Due to an exponentially expanding consumer base and a heightened level of product awareness, you might not have been able to get your hands on every shoe you hunted for in 2012, but there was certainly no shortage of solid alternatives ripe for the picking in their absence.

Frank Ocean and his Odd Future affiliates have been credited with (or blamed for, depending on how you look at it) bringing box logos to a more mainstream light, with Supreme’s imagery suddenly infiltrating MTV and the like to a larger extent than ever before. We’ll call Ocean a leader rather than a follower in that regard, with proof shown here via his on feet pair of the Supreme x Nike SB Dunk Low from back in 2002. Making the picture even more awesome is producer legend and jack of all trades Rick Rubin, whose cameo comes as a token representing the whispers that the two will be working together soon. Is last Thursday’s release of the Supreme x Nike SB Dunk Low the last of the series? It’s clear that the NYC-born skate/fashion-label is using the original Air Jordan III colorways as the base concepts for these shoes, so with ‘Fire Red’ being the assumed direction of this colorway, we could possible be in for one last hurrah before the AJ3 x SB Dunk is laid to rest for good (the White/Cement III is the last of the OG Air Jordan III colorways). Unless you were at Supreme locations on release day or lucked out with the online release, you’re probably still looking for a pair, so get ‘em before the prices get insane by picking one off like these new pairs from foamkicks on eBay.

It’s been roughly ten years since Supreme burst onto the sneaker scene with its highly-praised duet of SB Dunk Lows inspired by the Air Jordan III. During that span, both pairs have been heralded as the best SB Dunks of all-time while swimming among the ranks of the best sneakers of the decade, skyrocketing in value while giving anyone who owned a pair a crest of ‘true’ sneakerheadism. Tomorrow, Supreme revisits its first collaboration with Nike SB with a third Dunk Low; with the elephant print composed identically as its predecessors and the invitation of a new Supreme-centric bold red on the upper, this third go-around is poised to be just as good as the 2002 originals. These are set for a release tomorrow at Supreme chapter stores in New York, Los Angeles, and London as well as on the online stores, followed by a July 21st release in Japan; no RSVP or raffles here – just a camp-out and online battle like the “good” ol days. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the legendary Supreme x Nike SB Dunk Lows, the two team up again for a new spin on the classic design. First previewed back in March, the 2012 version keeps the same basic blocking as the originals, but this time with a bold red base color. Details have been quiet since pics first popped up, but finally, we have a solid release date for the project. The shoes will be available this Thursday, July 19th at the New York, LA and London Supreme stores, as well as online, followed by a Japan release on July 21st. There’s no question that these will disappear with the quickness, so plan accordingly and let us know if you’ll be taking a shot at grabbing yourself a pair later this week.

It’s been no secret that Nike SB has perhaps lost a bit of the colossal following it had towards the middle of last decade, when epic lineups and astronomical resale prices seemed like the norm. Internet speculators have long wondered what it would take to reach that level of dominance once again, with hopeful talk of retro-ing some of those classic colorways popping up now and then. What we have here is not quite a retro, but a reprisal of one of the most coveted collaborations in the form of Supreme x Nike SB, with this upcoming Nike Dunk SB Low again representing the Jordan look with the elephant print combining with touches of black and red, accompanied with a special edition hangtag and updated Supreme-branded and Nike SB-branded insole (the originals had no ‘SB’ markings whatsoever).
