The Vans range has been riding the line between luxurious drops and more street level skate sneakers with increasing ease as of late. Certainly falling into the category of luxurious is the ongoing partnership with Taka Hayashi, who has been continuously pushing the boundaries of what a pair of Vans should look like. For instance: when was the last time you saw crepe soles on a Vans silhouette? His upcoming pieces from the Vans Vault Spring 2012 collection all feature the squishy crepe treatment on bottom, from the Oxford-looking design of the Sierra Trek LX in both the high and low variants, to the strapped up leather pairs of the Engineer Boot LX. We hadn’t heard all that much of his plans after the spring 2011 collection dropped, so it’s always good news to learn of more new releases from the Taka Hayashi for Vans Vault. The latest is a slight variation on one of those early ’11 drops, itself a variant of one of Off the Wall’s greatest hits. The Taka Hayashi x Vans Vault Sk8-Hi immediately stands out even compared to the trio of Sk8s he dropped earlier this year thanks to an unprecedented leather wrap on the classic vulcanized waffle sole that gives this tonal brown combination of suede and leather a premium look that’s gotta be one of the best designs we’ve seen all in 2011 from any Vans collaborator. Taka Hayashi expertly utilized Pendleton wool on a couple of his Vans Vault collaborations last winter. For 2011, the third party material suppliers are known for a similar level of quality, if by a smaller group of fans. But that number will surely grow as soon as you lay eyes upon the Taka Hayashi x Vans Vault Sk8-Hi and Derby cast in leathers, suedes and canvases from leather handcrafters BILLYKIRK. Both models come in two toned colorways, each fairly neutral in its own right, and the Sk8s add a dual-layered leather wrapped sole to match the premium feel of the Derby’s crepe bottoms.
