Spaced out basketball sneakers are cool and all but artist Tom Sachs has taken the idea of out of this world Swoosh products to the next level, leverage his NASA obsessed aesthetic to create the NikeCRAFT collection. The quick capsule looks at Nike gear through the functional lens of astronautical wear, outfitting jackets, bags, and least of all the hybrid Mars Yard sneaker. The project launched in NYC yesterday at Sachs’ Space Program: MARS exhibition, taking place in the massive Park Avenue Armory which was transformed into an eerie portrait of the artist’s space age fantasies. Stay with us after the jump for the full photo recap of this unique team up between Tom Sachs and Nike, and be sure to check out the exhibit at the Park Avenue Armory if you’re in NYC.

Tom Sachs’ NIKECraft is currently up for viewing at the Park Ave Armory in the Upper East Side in NYC, so if you do plan on attending (it runs through June 17th), keep an eye out for this special Cole Haan x Nike wingtip dress shoe worn by the NIKECraft crew. While wingtip shoes aren’t all that new to fashion, this particular pair features a Swoosh on the upper, with the classic wingtip dots along the border, as well as a Nike tag on the tongue Peep the outsole and you’ll see Waffle-like traction on the forefoot and heel as well. Think you’re doin’ it when you’re on a G6 Jet? How about if you’re cruising in space? We recently showed you a preview video of the Nike Craft Space Camp, a project that was years in the making from next-level sculptor and artist Tom Sachs, who has a quirky obsessions with space travel and the ‘vintage’ Apollo program of the 60′s and 70′s. Working with Nike, he developed a space-ready capsule of artisanal gear dubbed NIKECraft, which features the Nike Mars Yard Shoe, the Trench, the MarsFly Jacket, and the Lightweight Tote – all built with applied materials taken from automotive air bags, mainsails for boats, and actual space suits, and other items never used before in Sportswear. Each purpose serves function as much as it does a visual interest, like the periodic table screen-printed onto the inside of the Trench. A detailed viewing of the Nike x Tom Sachs NIKECraft capsule is just below, so take a good look and let us know – should Nike outfit astronauts?

“Space Camp is an athletic, dietary and psychological conditioning program, designed to prepare our crew for the rigors of the Mars mission.”

Have you ever sat down and thoroughly considered the implications of deep space travel? Most of us have only scratched the surface of those philosophical and aeronautical concerns, but a group of young British creatives is going much further each morning as they arrive at Space Camp two hours before beginning their normal work days. So while Nat Geo might have you believing that this time could be better spent preparing for the apocalypse, these folks led by high-concept sculptor Tom Sachs are spending extra time every day prepping their bodies with Pat Manocchia’s exercises¬†to handle the nearly 55lbs that’s added when one dons an extravehicular space suit. This video and the 1948 London installation it’s teasing isn’t your typical sneaker collaboration to be sure, but another certainty is that the interest in Air Jordan NASA PEs just went up by orders of magnitude. ¬†Given the popularity of the space-inspired ‘Galaxy’ designs a short while back, what reaction would you predict for something like a NASA x Air Jordan XI ’100 Foot Dunk’? Let us know what you think of this unique pairing after the jump, and be sure to keep up with your five major movement groups!
