Under Armour Basketball Fall 2012 Showcase Media Event

The rapid growth of the Under Armour brand over the last fifteen years can be largely credited to its advanced athletic and training apparel and products, but in the realm of off-the-field performance footwear, UA is still relatively a new breed. It was just a little over two years ago that Under Armour began its foray into hoops, signing Milwaukee Bucks guard Brandon Jennings as its first-ever NBA athlete, and since then, they’ve added an impressive crop of young, versatile players like DeAndre Jordan, Kemba Walker, and Derrick Williams. Is there enough room for another brand to join the already packed store shelves? If a brand is aiming to emulate the industry standard of design convention, the answer is a resounding “no”.

But Under Armour isn’t a brand about the “status quo”. They’re going to offer something different, and they’re going to do it in the same way it did with its past products. Remember, UA is a billion dollar company for a reason, and they’re entering the performance basketball sector heavily armed. Earlier today, Under Armour invited a select group of sneaker and basketball media outlets to experience Under Armour’s Fall 2012 Footwear products first-hand – namely the Micro G Spine and visually stunning Micro G Charge BB. The Spine is cleanly designed, with a heavy focus on the unique midsole structure (a harder “cage” encapsulating the softer Micro G cushion technology), but our focus was on the Charge BB – a super high-top performance shoe that quite simply is unlike anything else out there. Continue on for more of Sneaker News’ recap of the event, a thorough gallery of the shoes, and an interview with UA Basketball designer Dave Dombrow.

Under Armour continues to build a respectable mix of veterans and young elite talents for its football division, but the basketball side of things might not even be as visible as their MLB endorsements.  But with guys like Brandon Jennings and DeAndre Jordan continuing to improve, UA’s hardwood prospects rise right along with them, and the brand’s latest roundball flagship is about to debut at just the right time to start seriously training for the fall season.  The Under Armour Micro G Torch has the look of a Hyperdunk x Hyperfuse hybrid, its synthetic etch-perfed upper accented by ‘Team Reflectivity’ hits and riding a LunarLon-esque Micro G sole.  Have a closer look at colorways slated to launch on Wednesday, August 15th after the jump, let us know how they compare to the aforementioned Nike Basketball styles as well as the adidas Crazy Light and stick with Sneaker News for updates.

Under Armour Signs Kemba Walker

July 5th, 2011 by | 32 comments

kemba walker under armour summary Under Armour Signs Kemba Walker

Kemba Walker was undoubtedly the biggest story of the 2011 NCAA March Madness Tournament as well as the Big East Tournament, as he led UConn to Conference and National supremacy with his lightning-quick speed and scoring prowess. His big-game presence got him drafted in the lottery segment of the 2011 NBA Draft, heading to the Charlotte Bobcats – a franchise partially owned by Michael Jordan. On Sneaker News, Kemba Walker made his presence known with his in-game Air Jordans, as he was prominently featured in our NCAA Feet: Toe-to-Toe segments, so many UConn and Bobcats fans were excited about the prospect of Kemba being an Air Jordan and Jordan Brand poster-child.

The possibility of Walker joining the ranks of Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, and Chris Paul in the Jordan Brand athlete fraternity were rather slim, and in a somewhat surprising marketing move, Under Armour snatched up the standout guard and signed him to a multi-year deal, though terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Walker joins fellow back-court phenom Brandon Jennings at the forefront of the Under Armour Basketball movement, and he was quick to defend his allegiance on the worldwide social media platform known as Twitter, claiming that he and Under Armour are “gon be ON” . Will Michael Jordan be okay with Kemba rocking the UA instead of the AJ? Let us know what you think. via CNBC/SLAM.
