Converse and UNDFTD is a duet we should definitely hear lots and lots about in the coming years. What happens when one of the truly iconic US streetwear brands teams up with arguably the most classic footwear brand for distribution at one of the world’s leading sneaker retailers? We’re witnessing the answer unfold as the Undefeated x Converse for Foot Locker collaboration spreads, and the Five Strikes brand will also maintain its own exclusive drops like this UNDFTD x Converse Star Player Hi. Remember that espadrille-soled Rod Laver we showed you last week? Looks like that’s not the only collaboration United Arrows has coming up with the Brand With the Three Stripes, this latest collection bringing together their Beauty & Youth label with one more Japanese fashion concern and a US-based company that straddles the Pacific. The adidas Originals Rod Laver Vin will soon drop in four new colorways that continue the Beauty & Youth x Bedwin x UNDFTD ‘B.B.U’ partnership, including April’s aforementioned rope-soled United Arrows edition, May’s Samba-inspired drop and two mesh designs for June. UNDFTD are the undisputed kings of West Coast cool, a high-end streetwear label and distributor who made their name through top-notch quality kept to limited numbers. The evolution of the fashion and sneakerhead blogosphere has made Eddie Cruz’ company a household name, but what happens when they start popping up in every mall in America? We brought you word of the upcoming UNDFTD x Converse for Footlocker collection earlier on today, marking a historic moment as far as a boutique like UNDFTD linking up with a chain store like Footlocker. We’re back with a bit more background on the range set to release for this three way team up, titled ‘Born Not Made’, which was recently launched at a press event featuring higher ups from each of the involved parties (Converse designer Matt Sleep and UNDFTD founder James Bond to name a few). Puma has garnered quite a bit of attention over the last year for their extensive work with Undefeated, but even before the ten packs of Clydes and two sets of RS hightops, the Five Strikes brand was working with the One Star on a variety of releases with their signature upscale streetwear meets modern militia look. Bringing the unique flavor from sneaker boutique to the nationwide retailers is the Converse x UNDFTD for Foot Locker collection, which carries that same slightly aggressive yet wonderfully neutral style on the Converse Pro Leather hightop and Star Player low, a couple of old school basketball silhouettes that are right up Eddie Cruz and co’s alley. Certainly an eye-opening move for one of the earliest trailblazing sneaker boutiques to join forces with one of the largest sneaker retailers over the last two decades, isn’t it? This partnership will definitely increase the awareness of Undefeated’s five-bar tally logo to casual Foot Locker customers across the nation. At what point along the way does an extended collaboration become a full-on merger? We’ve come to expect ongoing team efforts from individual designers in concert with sneaker brands (think adidas Originals by Originals), but the connection between West Coast streetwear beheamoths UNDFTD and Puma has gone beyond any co-branded efforts on record. Most recent high profile Puma Clydes have carried the Five Strikes logo, something of a mathematical necessity when you consider that this is now the tenth pack of UNDFTD Clydes in under a year. This new set goes with pastel ballistic nylon uppers, tonal suede overlays and white leather Formstripes, a formula slightly altered on the RS hightop that uses a grey or purple stripe depending on the rest of its body. UNDFTD’s extended collaborations with both Converse and Puma are by this point well documented, and nearly all of the Five Strikes brand’s German Cat teamups in the past year have been focused on one particular model. In fact, there might be some novice sneakerheads out there who think all Puma Clydes come with Undefeated cobranding, and now they’re adding another silhouette to this ever prolific alliance. The UNDFTD x Puma RS ‘Snakeskin Pack’ brings back the kind of collection we saw with their ‘Microdot Pack’, which means that similarly constructed Clydes are on the way soon with snake on their Formstripes in lieu of ankle bands.
