VANS AUTHENTIC The Vans Authentic is the first sneaker ever released by skate shoe company Vans. The sneakers made their debut in 1966 featuring a canvas upper and the signature rubber outsole for grip purposes. The Vans Authentic survives to this day as a frequently re-released sneaker in the Vans catalog.

The Vans Authentic has explored a variety of new patterns lately thanks to collaborative designs from the likes of Kenzo, Bodega and Mike Hill. The latest release follows a more traditional approach both in terms of aesthetics and sourcing, as an in-house plaid design matches up with a classic springtime tartan look. Red, white and blue weave throughout with a brown piping around the collar and tongue, so check them out up close below, then grab your pair straight from Vans.

Along with long lines outside the door, broken e-stores and doubled-or-greater resale prices on eBay, one easy way to determine if a collaboration succeeded is whether the partnership persists for later projects. By that measure, French fashion label Kenzo is crushing it with Off the Wall of late, as their sixth set of Vans lowtops makes its first appearance today. Following up on memorable patterns including multicolored snake and stripes, floral, grape, marble and moth designs comes three each Kenzo x Vans Authentics and Slip-Ons, all treated to prints somewhere between rosettes and colorful flowers as inspired by the clouded leopard. As far ahead of the Year of the Snake as they were with last April’s drops, Kenzo pushes even stronger to the top of the pattern charts with these designs combining two of the hottest textures. Boston’s Bodega has been among the sneaker world’s most prolific collaborators since opening in 2006. Their latest is the first teamup with Off the Wall in about two and a half years, as the Bodega x Vans Authentic anchors the boutique’s third cut and sew capsule. The ‘Stay True’ tagline fits the Authentic but BDGA brings something new to the table with a trio of fresh print on the classic Van Doren deck shoe. Vans Syndicate partners with another Alien Workshop rider as the brand’s co-founder and art director, Mike Hill comes on board for the original Off the Wall deck shoe. The Mike Hill x Vans Syndicate Authentic is done in a soft mint green, and features paper mache board graphics on the insoles. The visual details extend to a DIY rubber stamp kit that enable you to apply classic AW visuals to a variety of surfaces. Off the Wall continues its Van Doren series with further proof that Vans is the longtime leader in patterned sneaker designs. Today we examine five new releases for the spring 2013 season, split between three Vans Authentics and two for its spiritual successor, the Era. The former goes with a Hawaiian parrot print, one American flag-based patchwork a third that reminds how long the leopard look has been established, while the latter also says ‘Aloha’ in a floral getup, along with a checkerboard look. A springtime mention of marshmallows is bound to touch on the classic Peeps candy. But rather than readying a springy yellow or some other pastel shades on these new Vans Authentics named for their Marshmallow white soles, Off the Wall stuck with a trio of traditional shades that if any season, correspond most strongly with the fall/winter. Traditionally speaking, Vans Authentics and anything ending in ‘Hi’ are two mutually exclusive categories. On one hand, you’ve got the original 1966 Van Doren deck shoe, a design so slim that larger guys can make them look like ballet slippers. At the other end of the spectrum, something like the venerable Sk8-Hi offers padding and protection well above the ankle. But it turns out that combining these two previously disparate groups is a fairly natural pairing, as evidenced by the Vans Women’s Authentic Hi and how well it fits into the Off the Wall catalog. There’s one blackout pair, one in leopard and a third with a star pattern whose feline sockliner is begging for a roll-down, along with a single entry from the classic lowtop version.
