Platform shoes aren’t making a comeback for guys anytime soon (unless you count the ’90s Uptempos series’ notorious tooling), but for ladies, they’re considerably more common. A natural switch-up from the classic heel, a design like the Vans Sk8-Hi Platform offers a feminine boost the likes of which would have made one an envied grunge goddess back in the ‘alternative’ days. Today, the huge sole helps these stand out from the still growing pack of animal print sneakers, and you can see more of these along with a classic black/white leather mix after the jump while we all wait for the December release date.

Teamed up with Vans on New York’s The General, Dave’s Quality Meat has offered some fairly muted Off the Wall collaborations of late. The latest is no exception but also paradoxically a standout release, as the DQM x Vans Sk8-Hi ‘Woven’ joins a similarly styled Era to push into uncharted territory for California’s skate kings. Featuring a hand-woven black diamond pattern contrasted by caramel overlays, these have a luxurious feel and a price to match, so even though they’re a bit more costly than your average Sk8s or Eras, they’ll be gone soon after the at Thursday release at DQM.

2012 will go down as a year filled with patterns both established and newfangled and whether it’s the start of something enduring as we might expect given all the new developments, or just a temporary movement like the color trending that surrounds each Air Jordan XI Retro, Vans will be remembered as having been well ahead of the curve. Off the Wall has been offering dope prints for almost as long as the Van Doren brothers have offered Waffle soles, and this new set dropping for the holiday season reminds us that they still offer an unparalleled variety. The latest release is a new Vans Sk8-Hi with a paint-look American flag on the side panels, whose white contrast-stitched navy suede ‘frame’ furthers the Stars and Stripes look. Noted British sneaker supplier Offspring collaborated with Vans a little over a year ago on two low-key Era CA colorups and now have five different exclusives spread across two different classic silos. The Vans ‘Color Pop’ pack includes tonally-piped Chukkas on the eve of their 45th birthday and a duo of Sk8-His, a style that itself is approaching the big 3-5. During one of what seemed like hundreds of critical flops during Tuesday night/Wednesday morning’s epic WSOP Main Event final table marathon, the board fell with a rainbow of sixes. Poker players playfully refer to this three-card combo as the ‘Slayer flop’ (even though the tough final three missed the reference amid the million-dollar excitement), but metal maniacs are quick to point out it was another cornerstone band who first put forth The Number of the Beast. Vans and Iron Maiden are at it again for the fifth time, this new set of classic Off the Wall skate shoes inspired by the group’s acclaimed third album. After a literal reissue in conjunction with the Bones Brigade brought back two original Sk8-Hi styles, Vans California takes the series back to its roots with a couple of subtly colored leather drops featuring classic branding and those distinctive thin laces. The Vans Sk8-Hi Reissue arrives this month in two two-toned leather styles that add suede Jazz stripes for a bit of texture and contrast. They’ve got the look of true 1978 vintage releases with palettes so smart they had to have come from the past few years, and you can see more photos of both pairs below.
