You might see it if you dust off your copy of the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater or on the cover of some old skate mags, but no one will ever trick on San Francisco’s Hubba Hideout again.  The spot was one of SF’s skateboarding landmarks, so when you bring up the guy who first nailed a trick on its famed steps, we’re talking about a true OG.  The rider in question is Wade Speyer, who adds a Vans Syndicate Sk8-Hi ’91 Pro ‘S’ to the Sk8-Lows we saw last week in black with white stitching and flannel lining.  Check out the Hi below, let us know your height preference and find yours available at select Vans retailers like CNCPTS.

Wade Speyer x Vans Syndicate Sk8-Low

Wade Speyer is an OG in the skateboarding world, a guy who’s been in the game for over two decades.  Younger cats might not recognize him as a household name because his magazine ad peak came in the ’90s, but this is a guy who’s been from the ground floor to the super-bulky tech days and back again.  Accordingly, Speyer chose a twist on a classic for his Syndicate collaboration, this black Vans Sk8-Low with white contrast stitches, grey Jazz Stripes and, you guessed it, a gum waffle sole.  Click through to see the signature insignia that shout out one of Wade’s favorite bands in Slayer, then grab yours from Syndicate shops like Flatspot.

A couple of skateboarding’s biggest names cross paths with this new release from the Vans Core lineup, each bringing to market a no-nonsense lowtop that combines classic Off the Wall styling with modern performance advantages.  We’ll start with the Tony Trujillo’s long-running signature line, the new Vans TNT 5 Low looking the part of a summertime everyday-er thanks to white suede and canvas contrasted by just enough orange and black to turn heads.  And while you’re turning, have a look at Anthony Van Engelen’s Sk8-Lows in tonal blue plus a red foxing stripe, a marker that reminds us these designs’ molded polyurethane sockiners add extra comfort to the most gripping waffle base you can get this side of a fried chicken dinner.  Check them out in greater detail below, then head straight to the source to find these at the DQM for Vans General store.

Quick, name a couple of the most significant trends in sneaker design so far in early 2012.  Regular Sneaker News readers will be readily able to provide some insight on this topic, our chronicling of fairly huge numbers of simple/elegant black and/or white kicks and almost as many with animal prints early this year a clear indication of the kinds of looks the major brands expect you to want this season.  And in the case of this new pack of Vans Syndicate lowtops, they’ve been designed by a couple of pro skaters at the top of their game; in other words, a couple of guys who’re in a perfect position to set street-level trends.  The Jason Dill x Vans Authentic Pro ‘S’ puts it all out on the line with a silvery snakeskin upper that represents the counterpart to Anthony Van Engelen’s cheetah print Old Skool ’92 ‘S’.  Last but not least is a dual effort on a black leather Sk8-Lo that represents a confluence of the forces detailed above; are those accordingly the best of this pack that’s now available at Premier?

Animal prints are among the most widespread trends for early 2012, and we can trace this recent surge to roots laid in Japan over the past coupld years.  Among the earliest adopters were Vans Japan, who brought us in-house designs and WTAPS collabo drops with the safari look, and even a cheeky fly print from Supreme as all the other brands were just catching up.  Off the Wall continues this push by bringing to market three new lowtops as crafted by two of the riders they share with Alien Workshop.  Anthony Van Engelen and Jason Dill teamed up on the Vans Old Skool ’92 Pro, Authentic Pro and Sk8-Lo and they run the range from black leather-accented cheetah fur to hidden cheetah spots inside a plain black exterior, and all the way back to a silvery snakeskin (respectively).  Vans Syndicate releases are among the brand’s most limited, and you’ll find them on March 1st where available.  via TDS

Between its Syndicate collaborations and the various Legends Packs, Vans continues to honor some of the less obvious names who played a key role in skateboarding history.  The latest is authored by a skater who earned wider acclaim for his camera work, the Greg Hunt x Vans Syndicate Sk8-Lo ‘S’ and Era 46 Pro ‘S’ each looking like a final fade to black once the credits have rolled.  These two tonal black designs combine nubuck and waxed canvas for a look that’s in step with both today’s and classic styles, all while offering a subtle twist on the more typical suede and canvas look.  Check out both pairs and the Greg Hunt-designed tees after the jump and visit or phone Premier because they aren’t selling these online.
