WALE Wale is a rapper hailing from the Washington DC area well known for his lyrical references to various sneakers and general involvement in the sneaker culture. Wale cut his teeth on the mixtape circuit, with his 100 Miles and Runnin’ release generating a strong blog buzz that eventually converted into a major label signing. Wale is currently aligned with Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group.

Even if you weren’t you probably caught wind of the goings on-the various backstage scuffles that had the whole thing feel like the Source Awards of old. But we’re not here to talk about that-we’re here to talk about the sneakers. While he may be most known for his various ahead-of-schedule Foamposite sightings, Wale’s been the dude to debut plenty of footwear styles beyond the Nike Air Penny line. The latest is the Nike Air Max Terra Sertig, one of many ACG remixes on deck that slide some bubbled treatment into the lower bits of the silo. It seems that with each passing day the celebrity set becomes more and more infatuated with the world of sneakers. Being a subculture and all a little bit of backlash is to be expected, with a handful of folks taking the opportunity to lampoon those they’ve deemed as ‘not real sneakerheads’ once the images hit the internet. It’s safe to say Wale is not the right dude to do that with. One of his Instagram followers recently tried to put the MMG rapper on blast for hopping on the sneaker bandwagon once he found fame, to which Wale responded with a series of classic shots from way back proving he’s been in this thing for a minute. OG Nike Air Foamposite One’s, Nike SB Dunk Low ‘Tiffany’s, Nike SB Dunk High ‘Lucky’s, and more were spotted in the vintage shots, proving indeed that Wale has been doing this for a while. Recently Sneaker News got the chance to chat with Anthony Davis during the World Basketball Festival, discussing sneaker-related topics like his relationship with Nike and his favorite kicks. Part of the answer to the latter topic was ‘Foamposites’, and just a day after our short interview, he was spotted wearing the Air Foamposite Pro ‘Crimson’ while sharing a photo with guest-performer Wale (who wore the Air More Uptempo ‘Olympic’). Will Davis, who noted a possible ‘signature shoe’ during his discussions with Nike, be seen out and about with more Nike footwear now that he’s officially on their roster? Now hold up I ain’t trying to stunt man/but the Yeezys jumped over the Jumpman
That Kanye claim was first made on his recently released track New Gold Flow, appropriately echoed last night as him and the GOOD Music team performed a gang of tracks at the 2012 BET Awards. And while we’re not making any claims that ‘Ye is anywhere close to Mike’s line as far as importance in the sneaker world, you wouldn’t know it by looking at the celebrity crowd in attendance for the award show on the weekend. Kevin Hart wore the Nike Air Yeezy 2 ‘Pure Platinum’ as did Kanye, with Wale and Spike Lee both wearing the ‘Black/Solar Red’ at one point or other. Separating himself from saturation of his second Nike design Kanye even broke out a sample pair of Nike Air Yeezy 1′s to prove his footwear prowess. Of course Wale, self described as “Mr. never wear the same thing” had a nice switch up as well when he brought out some unreleased heat in the form of the Nike Air Penny V ‘Phoenix Suns’. The annual hip-hop extravaganza known as the HOT 97 Summer Jam has become an yearly highlight in the hip-hop game, marking the unofficial start of a season filled with relaxation and of course, your favorite hip-hop tunes. The HOT 97 Summer Jam 2012 was held this past Sunday at the customary location in East Rutherford, NJ, where a countless arsenal of today’s most relevant artists came through for a live showcase of the best music of the year. With the hip-hop scene comes the most up-to-date selection of sneakers, and with fellas like Wale, Joe Budden, J. Cole, and a slew of other hip-hop celebs known to rock sick sneakers on their feat, ‘HOT’ in HOT 97 might just be an egregious understatement. Who rocked the Miami Vice LeBron 9s? Hip-hop stars gathered at NYC’s Hammerstein Ballroom to celebrate the birthday of DJ Prostyle by performing live in front of a packed house of 3,500+ fans. As impressive as the set list was the sneaker sightings, with guys like Wale (Air Jordan VII ‘Bordeaux’), Ace Hood (LeBron 9 ‘South Beach’), Fabolous (Copper Foams), and Waka Flocka Flame (Air Jordan IV ‘Cavs’) providing the electric ambiance with their live music. The best ‘sneaker sighting’ of the night could go to Rev Run’s son Diggy, who wore the Air Jordan VI ‘DMP’. Perhaps more than any other sneakerhead, MMG member Wale is strongly associated with the tri-state area colloquially known as ‘the DMV’. But Wale never waits in line, a guy known for getting his Foamposites months before DC, Maryland and Virginia heads can cop their favorite kicks at shops along the I-95 corridor. He once again got ahead of the pack with the ’Redskins’ Nike Air Max 95 No-Sew to match a fresh new Brian Orakpo jersey as Wale took the stage at NikeTown in New York to celebrate the Swoosh’s new deal at the start of the 2012 NFL Draft.
