With the limited, surprise release of the “Red October” Nike Air Yeezy 2, it would appear that the Air Yeezy legacy has officially ended. Before we move on to focusing on the next big thing, perhaps the Kanye x adidas collaboration, we should take a look back. Sure, some of the colorways of both the Air Yeezy and Air Yeezy 2 are less sought after than others (It is a tad bit easier to get your hands on the Net/Net Yeezys than it is the Black/Pink), but all of them sold out instantly when they released and fetch a high price on eBay. But, what of the Yeezys that never saw that retail push?

After some not-so-subtle comments were dropped by Kanye West during a string of late 2013 tour dates and interviews, it became very evident that there was trouble in paradise and the relationship between him and Nike was on the rocks at best. After revealing on a Philadelphia radio show that he had signed a deal with a major brand, the rumors immediately began to swirl that West would be leaving the Swoosh for the Three Stripes. It didn’t take long from there for the adidas partnership to be officially confirmed – an announcement that sent shockwaves through the sneaker landscape and raised all sorts of questions over what would become of the feverishly anticipated “Red October” Air Yeezy 2.

Will Nike Ever Release the “Red October” Yeezy 2?

December 25th, 2013 by | 48 comments

red yeezy 2 cancelled Will Nike Ever Release the Red October Yeezy 2?

After the sudden news of a release of the Red October Yeezy 2 this Friday, Foot Locker quickly recanted their statement and tentatively cancelled the release faster than you could bellow “You ain’t got the answers, Sway!” into a microphone. Unless the nationwide chain retailer – the only sneaker store that ever put out any sort of release info for the controversial kicks – pulls another fast one and decides to release them on the December 27th date it originally established, it doesn’t seem like Red Octobers in 2013 are a reality.

What was once the most anticipated release of the year has now become a “just get it over with” scenario, and as Nike continues to wait while Kanye continues to air out his Swoosh-related business on the radio, we’re left to wonder if Nike will choose to scrap it as a whole and do its best to pretend the shoes never existed. However, there are still the lucky few who won free pairs through Kanye’s giveaway, and with fine print reading the shoes won’t arrive until January 2014 the earliest, Nike may just wait until those freebie pairs start making their way out in an effort to minimize the Red October headlines. Kanye-designed sneakers are 100% happening in 2014, however, whether it be the Yeezy or the Yeezi (or whatever name the hip-hop turned designer and adidas has formulated). Your thoughts? Chime in below.

Nike Air Yeezy 2 – Release Recap

air yeezy 2 release recap Nike Air Yeezy 2 Release Recap

The smoke has cleared and the dust has settled. Do you have your Nike Air Yeezy 2′s? It was no secret going into this weekend that this was set to be the biggest release date in a while, if not of all time. The ‘Galaxy’ fever that went around earlier in 2012 served as a bit of a precursor, showing to what lengths people were willing to go to to get their hands on some sneakers. Following that release, an event that plenty of mainstream media outlets picked up, Nike started shuffling things around a bit, imposing their new Twitter RSVP system, a system that seemed tailor made to avoid the same type of stuff going down when the Nike Air Yeezy 2 inevitably arrived.

Did it work? Well, sorta. Most official Nike doors managed to shake off the lineups and such, with the handful of premium Nike Sportswear spots that did have them here in the US opting for the Twitter RSVP option on their pairs (it was either that or try your luck at Nikestore). The raffle system was also a popular choice, with big box stores like Footlocker’s House of Hoops franchise doling out the chance to purchase via email raffle, and many boutiques passing out tickets, wristbands, and the like. A few spots around the world proved however that you can have campouts without chaos, like Social Status in NC who treated their patrons to a steakhouse dinner complete with their pairs being served up on platters at the end of it all. SoleBox out in Berlin had plenty of folks lined up as well, and Nike Wowsan 107 in South Korea had quite the crowd with a raffle announced via their LED banner. Did you get your pair? Will this release ever be topped? Will the campouts carry on or is something more orderly a necessary step?
