Does the name Zhijun Wang sound familiar? The artist has really been going in on the Nike Air Force 1 creations over the past year or so. Revisiting his Nike Air Force 1 Low ‘Year of the Dragon’ is a pair that takes care of the next beast in the zodiac cycle. Pictured is the Nike Air Force 1 ‘Year of the Snake’, which utilizes a milky upper and some insane lasering technology to achieve the traditional Chinese graphics across the top. The Duanwu Festival kicks off in China on Saturday, June 23rd, but it’s also known as the ‘Double Fifth’ for being the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. This celebration of the approximate summer solstice is particularly relevant in this Year of the (Water) Dragon, and the New Balance HS77 custom job pictured above reflects both of those themes in addition to the evolution of a concept by one artist. Zhijun Wang‘s ‘Dragon Boat Festival’ HS77 follows up on his spectacular laser-etched Air Force 1 Lows with a red-accented watery look that adds scales and waves in honor of its muse. Nike Sportswear head Gentry Humphrey recently showed us that there’s another ‘Year of the Dragon’ Nike Air Force 1 Low on the way with a more vibrant colorway than January’s release, which means that earlier black silken drop ends up closer to the elegant if simple 30th anniversary pairs we’ve seen from the XXX ‘Pearl’ collection. Sneaker customizer Zhijun Wang (author of the spectacular laser-etched edition) has also offered his own take on how to blend the YOTD and 30th anny themes, his new appropriately nicknamed AF1 Lows adding a bunch of golden detailing that represent the five elements and their place in Chinese lore.
