Sneaker News The Air Jordan 9 “Space Jam” aka “True Red” is set to return in the Fall of 2026. This marks the first time this specific colorway released in ten years (it last hit stores in 2016), and marks the sixth overall time this sneaker has hit market.
The Air Jordan 9 has the unique distinction of never being worn by Michael Jordan during a game while a member of the Chicago Bulls. It is largely remembered for being the Air Jordans that released during his shocking retirement after the ’92-’93 championship winning season. Designed Tinker Hatfield witnessed MJ’s worldwide stardom after the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona; therefore, he infused a global approach by adding in different languages and the planet itself.
Air Jordan 9 “Space Jam” History
Many times in the 1980s and 1990s, Michael Jordan’s Air Jordan footwear broke through the walls of the game and became notable props throughout pop culture. Seeing Air Jordans in your favorite sitcom or movie was not out of the ordinary, but few can compare to when Michael Jordan himself laces up shoes. In the 1996 movie Space Jam, which was filmed during MJ’s first retirement, he’s seen wearing the Air Jordan 11 in the stunning black/white/royal colorway; that colorway became immportalized as the “Space Jam” Jordans, but there’s another shoe that has earned that title.
This Air Jordan 9 is an original colorway from 1993; while it was never worn in an NBA game, Michael Jordan did wear them briefly during the 1996 movie Space Jam. Although this nickname isn’t often associated with the specific style (“True Red” or “White/Black” are the more commonly used ones), we foresee the moniker taking off as Space Jam approaches its 30th Anniversary in November 2026.
