The Museum Edition has come and gone as a Juice-exclusive release in Hong Kong only last month, but that doesn’t mean US sneakerheads will necessarily have to resort to the resale market to get your hands on a pair of CLOT x Nike Tennis Classics. The suede Quickstrike is set to arrive soon at the best Nike Sportswear retailers, where on March 10th their nappy red-on-grey design will be unleashed in limited quantities. They don’t have the wearaway potential that the Museums offered, but these are equally excellent in bridging the gap between this model’s 1970s origins today’s hottest trends. Collaborations by Nike always catch us by surprise, unless it’s with CLOT of China, who has developed quite the relationship with Nike Sportswear to the point where we can almost expect a partnership to arise at least once a year. For this 2012 output, CLOT co-founder Edison Chen selected the Nike Tennis Classic, calling it one of his favorite NSW models and envisioning it as part of a Nike museum exhibit fifty years down the line. That explains the ‘worn’ look (not the yellowed VNTG treatment that has been the subject of outcry), which is a depiction of a year 2012 perspective on one of Nike’s oldest shoes in the archives. In describing the CLOT x Nike Tennis Classic Suede that’s set to release, we noted that while they’re not built in the same style as their spectacular 1World Air Force 1 Lows, there is indeed a ‘Museum’ version that seems to have multiple possible appearances. How this glossy look appears to you will depend strongly upon the lighting where its seen, but even more so upon the extent to which they’ve been hand crafted. You see, one in five pairs of the Tennis Classic AC TZ ‘Museum’ will be hand-finished and individually by CLOT, but it looks like they’ll only be available at Hong Kong’s Juice on the February 22nd release date. We already know that President Obama is on board with the Jumpman, but does the First Lady rock heat as well? Apparently more prone to lifestyle sneakers, Michelle Obama was recently spotted on-air with Ellen Degeneres rocking the CLOT x Converse Chuck Taylor ‘Handshake’. The Converse Chuck Taylor is obviously a very popular sneaker, so normally this wouldn’t be notable, but the fact that she showed up on the set with a collabo pair from one of Asia’s biggest footwear forces certainly hints at some deeper knowledge of the game, or at least a good stylist. Are Barack and Michelle Obama America’s first presidential sneakerhead couple? Is Joe Biden getting a pair of Nike Air Yeezy’s 2 before they drop? Has it really been over nine months since we saw the last Kazuki Kuarishi contribution to the adidas Originals by Originals initiative? During that time, we’ve seen David Beckham’s capsule soldier on like the veteran footballer himself and Jeremy Scott’s popularity blow up like the explosion of color that typifies his style, but Kazuki hasn’t been heard from since the last KzKLOT release last spring. But CLOT, Kazuki and Three Stripes are teaming up to bring the mesh Shelltoe back at least once more, the CLOT x Kazuki x adidas Originals KzKLOT Superstar switching from white/green to another adi-fave in royal blue with a softer shade on the laces. What is it about Nike’s lineup of retro tennis sneaks that has made them such a hot commodity for collaborators across the Pacific as of late? From Fragment and UNDERCOVER out in Japan and now to Hong Kong’s CLOT, something about the minimal low-cut looks has certainly struck a chord with the cool kid crowd overseas. The latest is the CLOT x Nike Tennis Classic Suede, coming in a cream suede upper along with some hits of blood-red leather and CLOT branding. On that note there’s a bit of asymmetric design, with the left sneaker bearing the CLOT logos on the insole and heel hit, and the right one using the typical Nike Sportswear detailing. Hong Kong lifestyle label CLOT’s latest collaboration with Nike Sportswear is decidedly less intricate than their breathtaking 1World Air Force 1, but what the above pictured teamup lacks in complexity, this new lookbook adds back in playfulness. The CLOT x Nike Tennis Classic Suede is a perfect compliment to a huge range of outfits, as demonstrated in these preview images depicting founders Edison Chen and Kevin Poon suited up for a variety of urban adventures. The last time Nike Sportswear collaborated with CLOT, they produced a stunning red silk Air Force 1 Low as part of the 1World collection that raised the bar on both packaging and material execution. We don’t expect any stunning tear or burn-away effects with their latest teamup, but sticking to a palette heavy on red and white did indeed turn out quite well on the upcoming CLOT x Nike Tennis Classic Suede. This pair has roughly the opposite distribution of these colors when compared to the AF1s, and though they’re unlikely to meet with the same insane response on the resale market (where pairs of of the CLOT AF1s consistently fetch well over a grand) make no mistake in thinking that they’ll be on store shelves past the release date.
