Sneaker News Weekly Rewind: 5/19 5/25

Three-day weekend -whoop whoop! Luckily, this week’s Sneaker News was so groundbreaking that there’s enough for you to read about throughout the extended holiday. Starting off, we got a look at upcoming Jordan Melo and CP3 models, but it might’ve been D-Wade’s ‘Gold Coin’ that stole the shoe. The ‘Posite’ sector was packed with heat as well; we provided you detailed looks at the ‘Gem Green’ Foamposite One while introducing a new colorway of the Hyperposite. In related Air Penny headlines, Sneaker News hit the world with the first detailed look at the Air Penny II ‘Sprite’. Multiple angles of the ‘What The Kobe?’ also raised the excitement on that crazy shoe as well and Nike SB finally hit us with release information for the long-awaited ‘Vino Rosso’ Janoski.

In further Nike news, we got a look at two upcoming Speed Turf Max colorways as well as a first look at the ACG x Air Max hybrid known as the Air Max Sertig. Reebok made one of its biggest splashes in recent memory with the re-release of the Reebok Question, as retailers nationwide have been reporting complete sell-outs of their Question stock. New Balance celebrates the 30th Anniversary of its Flimby, UK factory, Ewing Athletics launches its official website, and UNDFTD collaborates with Converse yet again. Finishing off the week of Sneaker News top stories is a ripe collection of Celebrity and NBA Feet sightings, our Classics Revisited features of the Nike Dunk High, and a look at some more Air Jordan samples like the Rainbow Pack and the Air Jordan VII Low. There’s no better way to enjoy your weekend to relax and read up on all the latest Sneaker News, so check out the biggest headlines below!

Classics Revisited: Stussy x Nike Dunk High (2001)

NIKE DUNK HIGH WEEK

What an amazing week it’s been for Dunk nuts worldwide! We’ve covered four of the more memorable Dunk Highs of all-time, starting with the UNDFTD No-Liners on Monday and hitting you with Wu-Tang fire yesterday. But no set of ‘best-of’ sneakers is complete without the inclusion of Stussy, the clothing label and urban culture anchor that paved the way for the many sneaker collaborations that followed, so in a way, we’re saving the best for last. This 2001 Dunk you see here was actually first ever collaboration between Nike and a clothing company (not to be confused with the Stussy x Nike Air Huarache of 2000 – a project between Nike and Michael Koppelman of Stussy UK); could the Stussy x Nike Dunk High be credited for setting the trend of sexy sneaker collabs of the 2000′s? Let’s take a look.

By 2001, the Dunk had grown to be a cult classic, gaining serious steam across the globe for its skate-friendly and Retro appeal. So, Nike decided to hit up Stussy yet again allowed them to give their own spin on the Dunk, composing two completely distinct colorways – a tonal black leather version and the Brown/Khaki we’re placing the spotlight on here. While both colorways were rather simple, they introduced exotic materials and specialty fabrics on the Swoosh – snakeskin on the Black colorway and ostrich on the Brown. The Stussy x Nike Dunk High was also a ‘test-run’ or experiment of sorts on extremely limited distributions; each of the four Stussy chapter stores (NYC, LA, Tokyo, London) released twenty-four pairs in total per day (twelve pairs per colorway) until the entire stock was depleted. This resulted in a stretch of 2+ weeks of line-ups every morning, setting the table for other ‘camp-outs’ for these limited-edition sneakers. Style, quality, concept, and trendsetting – the Stussy x Nike Dunk High had it all. Take a look at the extra looks below and stay tuned to Sneaker News as we hit you with yet another week of Classics Revisited treats!

Nike Zoom Hyperdunk 2011 Low Linsanity Away PE | Release Reminder

Some say ‘Linsanity’ already saw his 15 minutes of fame. If he stays healthy and plays smart basketball (while keeping the TOs down), 15 minutes can easily be 15 years. In terms of offseason player movements, a lot of attention will be placed on the New York Knicks, who have quite a number of contracts to deal with (Jeremy Lin’s being the top priority). He could very well be a Knick for years to come, or he might pack his bags to a team either looking for true guidance in his position or a marketing magnet for the Asian fanbase. In any case, Linsanity ain’t stopping anytime soon, and you can keep the good times rolling with tomorrow’s release of the ‘Away’ colorway of his Hyperdunk 2011 Low PE. Your thoughts on where Lin will play this November? Let us know in the comments below and if you want to complete your Linsanity Hyperdunk set, cop ‘em now on from psneakers on eBay.

Nike Air Penny II Sprite Release Reminder

As the climate gets increasingly warmer, sneaker colorways change in accordance with the milder temperatures – so what better than a redux of the refreshing ‘Sprite’ colorway on one of the best Air Penny designs in history? Sneaker News gave you a first look at the Air Penny II ‘Sprite’ earlier this week, and without surprise, the response was very positive among the Nike Retro and Air Penny collective. Nike Air Force 1 Bespoke Vachetta By Slovadon Part 2

If you’re impressed by Nike’s production of its Supreme-grade models of the Air Force 1, maybe it’s time to move on up to the adult table and hit up 21 Mercer for a pair of Bespokes. Slovadon’s been getting his fill with Bespokes for quite some time as one of 21 Mercer’s most frequent customers, and he hits us yet again with another pair of Bespokes done in the ‘Vachetta’ styling; his last creation emphasized rich leathers and brown/chocolate/walnut, but his latest pick-up focuses on a sportier look with a grey/navy upper, a navy leather-wrapped midsole, and an orange outsole. Another tidbit of Slovadon trivia; he was the winner of the recent FRSHR Than Your AVRGE contest, taking the crown with – what else – a pair of Bespokes. More of his latest creation below, so take a look and let us know what you think!

Nike Air Trainer 88

The year 2013 seems far away, but we’re approaching the mid-point of 2012 – so it’s coming sooner than you think. As you may already know Nike Sportswear has celebrated the 25th Anniversary of its 1987 models by re-releasing them to the public, and a look at this 2013 sample of the Nike Air Trainer ’88 may allude to a return of all the ’88 models (or we can at least expect this Black/Grey/Hot Red sample with reflective uppers). But before you move on to the gallery, we should clear some clutter regarding Air Trainer nomenclature of the last two decades. The ‘Air Trainer ’88′ isn’t the Air Trainer ’88. Sure, it released in 1988, but this model is actually called the Nike Air Trainer TW (none of the original models were given any yearly designation).

So why all the confusion regarding Air Trainer names and such? It started getting a bit ‘out of hand’ (for lack of a better description) between ’87 and ’94 because forty-two different Training and Cross-Training models were released – most of which had the wore ‘Trainer’ in the official name. When the Auburn/Bo Jacksons were re-released, they were called the Air Trainer SC, when it fact the original name was Air Trainer SC III. Moving on from that point, there has been some jumbling of names and Nike hasn’t recovered since. The ‘TW’ line in question debuted in 1988 and was advertised as a lightweight and washable shoe as it was built with ‘washable’ materials like mesh, and based on this sample, it appears ‘TW’ isn’t making a comeback at all and will return simply as the Air Trainer ’88. If you want some clarification on the matter, check out the original Nike ad of the Air Trainer TW below as well as the full gallery of this 2013 sample, and for a complete look, move on to the listing from dballaholic on eBay.

Air Jordan 1 KO Black Varsity Red White

Earlier this week we hit you with a release date for this original Air Jordan from 1985, but it’s time to take a closer look at each individual pair. The 2010 releases of the AJKO were the surprise hits of that year, but we imagine these won’t exactly sneak up on people because the AJKO and the Air Jordan 1 in general has been an intensely popular pick – and what better than this original ‘Banned’ colorway? These are destined for stores this June 2nd at select Jordan Brand retailers, so take another look below because you’ve never seen this version in this condition (remember those originals we showed you last weekend?).
