KEVIN DURANT
Kevin Durant, aka KD and ‘Durantula’, is the youngest of the three Nike Basketball signature athletes. His Zoom KD signature line is designed by Nike designer Leo Chang; the Zoom KD is most recognized for its low price-point – a product detail specified by Kevin himself. Kevin is currently the star player of the Oklahoma City Thunder, and has won three consecutive NBA Scoring Titles from 2010 to 2012.

Kevin Durant is definitely one of the more approachable sports stars on Twitter, with his @KDTrey5 Twitter page headlined by a “I’m me, I do me, and I chill” personal slogan – one that we can all relate to in some way another. The Nike KD Trey 5 is indeed a tribute to Durant’s internet presence, with his handle typed out in basic font on the tongue, but the rest of shoe is better fit for the court thanks to the Zoom cushioning and XDR outsole. There’s a good chance that the Nike KD Trey 5 is going to be an exclusive release to Asia given the aforementioned outdoor-specific XDR outsole, so better not miss out on this rare chance to pick up a pair – there’s a sample size 9 ready to be picked up from cascade-qt on eBay.

The globalization of basketball and its reputation as an internationally celebrated sport is a movement very much sparked by Nike’s efforts with the World Basketball Festival in 2010 and 2012. The Nike Hoop Summit, started in ’95 in Springfield, MA, is an annual event which brings the world together, boasting an impressive alumni list like US players Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and Anthony Davis and international stars like Dirk Nowitzki, Yi Jianlian, and more. This year’s Nike Hoop Summit date will feature this year’s USA Junior National Select Team going against a World Select Team of 19-and-under players, which will go down on April 20th in Portland, OR. Check out a nice visual recap of the Nike Hoop Summit history and check out the Hoop Summit official website for more information.

There’s good cop and there’s bad cop, but how about “dumb” cop? Poor guy can’t even figure out that one of his detectives is the very guy he’s looking for. Kevin Durant stars in this latest Foot Locker commercial playing two roles, the detective, and also the fugitive KD who is wanted for being “not nice” and viciously dunking on helpless opponents. The chief does have a lead with a piece of key evidence – one shoe from the Nike KD V ‘Ice Blue’ aka ‘Gullwing’ (the same shoe Detective Durant happens to be missing). Check out the full video and be sure to check out Foot Locker for all your Nike KD V gear, and whenever you spot KD doing his damage on the court, let your Twitter community know by tweeting @FootLocker and using the hashtag #KDISNOTNICE.

How’s this for a loopy connection: in what figures to be the final visit to Sacramento for the former Seattle Supersonics, that team’s last first round draft pick made a lasting impression on a young fan whose hometown team will soon relocate to the Pacific Northwest. Another saddening tragedy dawned on us after the events in Newtown, CT unfolded early yesterday morning. While it’s difficult to react appropriately to such an occurrence, NBA star Kevin Durant made sure that he had the victims in his thoughts and prayers by wearing his Nike KD V ‘Home’ with ‘Newtown, CT’ written on the upper of the shoe. In addition to Durant’s noble gesture, the entire NBA properly adjusted their pre-game schedules to reflect on the events with a moments of silence. On a night where sports was a distant second in terms of significance, Durant, the NBA, and the pro-sports community displayed unity that hopefully sends the right message to viewers and to the residents of Newtown, CT.

It’s been a pretty big year for Kevin Durant. In addition to claiming his third consecutive scoring title, taking his first trip to the NBA Finals and winning an Olympic gold medal, KD has also taken huge strides when it comes to not only letting his personality show, but letting it shine. As a result, he has gone from shy and unassuming rising star to full blown superstar, and his marketability is at an all-time high right now. Along for the ride on KD’s dominating 2012 campaign was his fourth signature Nike shoe, the futuristic KD IV, a true gamechanger for the KD line that helped catapult it into the same rarefied air with the annual LeBron and Kobe sigs.
There’s no doubt that the humble and easy to like young star’s growing popularity had a lot to do with the shoe’s status leap, but a large share of the credit goes to Nike Basketball Design Director, Leo Chang, who has overseen the entire lifespan of the KD signature lineage, focusing on mirroring the evolution of Durant’s game with each shoe, each step of the way. There’s no doubt that Leo raised the bar with the KD IV, which turned a monumental corner for the line in the hearts and wallets of consumers, so expectations were understandably high for the fifth shoe and Leo was up for the challenge. The result was an unexpected sharp turn away from the previous models, both functionally and aesthetically – a decision that Leo told us came from KD, himself, and one that he was eager to oblige with. Continue on for our one on one interview with Leo Chang to get the full lowdown on the new KD V, and look out for the first colorway hitting Nike Basketball retailers everywhere this weekend.
